I like the sound of bells, have always enjoyed them at the schools that rang them that I've attended. Didn't you know about the bells when you moved into the house? I assume they don't keep you from sleeping, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I guess you could bring a suit in nuisance but I am pretty sure you would lose.

Move.
Its kind of like moving next to an airport, then complaining about the airplane noise. If you had been there 51 years, and the church just moved in perhaps you would be able to do something, but the church was there when you moved in. I think your stuck with it. |

Didn't you see the church when you bought the house??? The church has been there longer than you! You wouldn't buy a house next to a railway and complain about the trains and demand for them to be removed. I will tell you what to do...MOVE! |

You are the one who moved next to a church. What did you think was going to happen? If you moved next to an airport, would you ask the planes to stop taking off because it was too loud? |

I guess the only thing you can do is move farther away from the Church. I'm surprised you haven't gotten use to them already. I don't think it's that big of a deal. |

Did you not know the bells where there when you moved there? If you moved near a church then this is to be expected like finding a chicken bone in chicken soup. I doubt you live there before the church... |

for as annoying as it is, especially if you want to sleep in past 9am (or you're not feeling well), think of those who are deaf and cannot hear them. Consider it a blessing. |

It's the same thing if you purchased your home in a flight zone, the flight zone was already there when you moved in so you can't expect them to re-rout the planes... likewise for the church and any "nuisances" you feel exists as a result of activity that took place before you took title.
Check out your disclosures from when you purchased your home and see if it was disclosed, if not you may have a legal cure for your problem, see an attorney.
You could also invest in double glazed windows (they work wonders) to solve the problem.
The church is full of voters who will vote as the church tells them so don't count on the city council doing anything to help! |

Well personaly the bell at a church in town where I live have been broken untill just recently and I enjoy the sound even if its loud. It probably means a lot to a lot of people in your community and thats why you are not able to do anything about it. Sorry. Other than that I wish I could help but enjoy it because its really a nice thing to hear if you ask me. |

I love church bells. They sound really nice.
And haven't you ever heard the phrase, "You can't fight city hall"?
That means you're probably out of luck with trying to stop the bells. |

Go to the church when services are in session and bang a drum or blow a horn and see how they like it. |

You might want to sue the church under a public nuisance theory. In order to prevail, you will need to show that the inconvenience of the bells outweighs the utility. If you win, the remedy you should seek is an injunction which would enjoin (prevent) the church from operating the bells so frequently and at such a high volume.
I just took the Bar Exam, so I know a little about this stuff, and unlike everybody else in this room, I think you have a chance to win...give it a try, and good luck! |

I had to live across the street from a church that rang its bells three times a day.
They were programmed to ring vapid inspirational songs, AND they were dreadfully untuned.
I offered to reprogram the music, and I found an expert who would see if they were tunable. The church refused these two free services. I guess they like their inspirational noise boring and out of tune.
I moved, but only after hiding a really loud and annoying noisemaker on their property that went off whenever the bells started ringing. I heard from a neighbor it took a month for them to figure it out. We must be thankful for small victories.

I lived in a town where they went off once everyday and I think it was about 6:00 (don't have a clue to the reason) but they were kind of nice.........but that sounds like a bit much to me too.....a bit aggravating I'm sure!! I don't know what else you can do except move. Maybe if you got a petition from all the neighbors. You'd have to do some walking but you might get a good response.....and asking them to just maybe ring them once a day or something. |

I lived next to a church and hated it too. I also hated not having a parking space on Sundays. You can try going to a city council meeting, but your chances of getting the bells silenced is unlikely. |

Turn your house onto a Mosque. You can then do the 'call to preyer' 5 times a day. Plus, you don't have to pay ground rent as it's a place of worship! |

I would hire my own personal attourney in this matter who may give all the above a "nudge" since this is disturbing the peace....it might also help if you could get a neighborhood petition going. |

You could try a lawsuit. Petition people in your area. I'm sure you're not the only ones disturbed by the daily clanging.
Church bells were originally made because many people did not have clocks and were summoned by the bell when church started.
These days, everyone has a clock and church bells are more of a traditional thing, rather than a necessity. Most churches who still have bells are willing to negotiate ringing schedules with their neighbors. It's time you rounded up a committee of neighbors to discuss this with the church. If they don't budge, call the local newspapers and Tv news to tell your story. |

Wait until you get a Mosque three houses down with their calls for prayer in the middle of the night over a loudspeaker. You will get death threats for complaining. |

Hire a lawyer and sue them for disturbing the piece or make a petition |

Comparing this to aeroplane noise is a really bad analogy. We tolerate aeroplane noise because it serves a useful purpose - getting people places. Church bells used to serve a purpose in telling people the time (although I suspect it's got something to do with constantly reminding people of the church's authority). Now they serve no purpose because everybody has clocks, as the questioner points out. If you like the sound of church bells, fine, play a CD of it or something, but churches should not be allowed to impose this noise on everyone else. |

I and other neighbours are complaining because we were here before the bells. Thanks to a lottery grant the church bells have been repaired, wouldn't you think they would research before dishing out 1,000's of pounds on something that has been silent for as long as I've lived in the village = 20 years. Money not well spent - thanks lottery officials, there are much better causes... |

For all you ppl who say it's no big deal or move, let me ask you what you'd do if a Muslam blared his prayer music before sunrise?????? After all that is, his/her religious right!!!!!
