*Juvenile justice:
The treatment of youth offenders by the Australian legal system maybe? (Look up the Young Offenders Act, 1997 NSW on the AustLii website). You can talk about the high recidivism of youth offenders (about 30% of them will reoffend either as youths or adults, it's pretty high and thus policies should be reviewed/reformed) despite the correctional institution's aim of rehabilitation. Look at youth Diversionary Schemes, detention (if preventive methods fail or if the crime committed is too severe), post-release assistance, youth community conferences as alternatives to court heartings/detention.

*Mandatory sentencing
Recent mandatory sentencing laws in NT and WA? Compulsory imprisonment after 3 offences even though they are totally different and/or years apart. You can talk about how it aims to to achieve formal equality but hides injustices as it targets Aboriginal people and those who are socio-economically disadvantaged.
*Or just recidivism in general. If correctional institutions were truly working then the recidivism rate would be 0%.
