Anyone else fed up with the new 'trend' to sue for everything??

We have had a family that have tried to claim compensation from the department store that I work in (family owned business) because they didnt receive a refund for something that wasnt faulty - and they had, had for 12 months - they had redecorated there living room and the item didnt match anymore!?!?
Additional Details
ps - this is in the UK - in the North. It depresses me this trend has started in the UK - too many seem to be trying to make a quick buck,

It is like the use of 911. People have been reported calling it for a barking dog or to get directions. They don't want the government in their lives until they need a dispute or problem solved. I think greedy lawyers have promoted the litigation craze in the U.S. Court TV helped too.

Yes, yes I am. Did You see the question from a girl wanting to sue sainsburys because her loaf of bread was only partially cooked?

Hippy Herder
This question is offensive to me.

My lawyers are drawing up documents now.

I will see you in court.

Yes, I too, am fed up, but I feel powerless. What can we do? Your company gets a meaningless lawsuit, bars are responsible for drunks, a judge (who should know beetter) sues a dry cleaner for millions, running them outa bizness, because they lost a pair of his pants? It goes on all the time and the dam government, which is a majority of lawyers, does nothing to change this system. As I hear it, the UK has it so whoever loses pays the bills. That might stop a lotta suits, but again, we're just the sheep & we're gonna coninue to get sheared.
Yeah, sure, there are some lawsuits that are right, but that doesn't justify the EXCESS of frivolus suits. The whole system is screwed.

Yes! Compensation culture is awful. Yes people should be able to claim for serious errors, accidents etc but what we are developing is a situation where scummy chavvy people are seeing is a way to suppliment their state handouts.

Yet another example of where UK is becoming more like the USA - seriously is there anything good that comes out of that country?

The problem isn't lawyers, but ignorant people who think everything is their right but have no idea that rights bring with them responsibilities. Add in the fact that this world is not perfect and people's unrealistic expectation that it is perfect AND revolves around them and you have a recipe for lots of litigation.

Quick fix - lower standard for nuisance lawsuits and if court finds that you filed one, then sanction the attorney. Attorneys will quit taking these cases.

Second quick fix - talk with you legislature to change some of the causes of action, reducing the reasons that people can sue.

lol yeah have a freind who sued another friend when she fell over her friends kids toy and broke her ankle!!

When that same friend dented yet another friends car door with hers she took no responsability saying it was an act of god!!

The days of being responsible for one's own actions are gone. Everything is somebody else's fault. Not by coincidence, that "somebody" is generally the one with the deepest pockets. Remember that the right to sue is one of the things that makes America great. Remember too, that win- lose or draw, the LAWYERS still get paid. There is no incentive for them NOT to take a case. Even the most ridiculous might get an out-of-court settlement just to avoid the hassle of going to court.
How to change a culture this pervasive ? I wish I knew.

Sway
of course, my favorite is the lady who sued (and won) a hefty sum for tripping over an unruly kid in a furniture store and broke her ankle or something - she said the store was negligent for letting the kid run around

the kid was her own son

There's nothing new about it, we've been a litigious culture for years. We've spent billions on stupid lawsuits and have lost some forty years of technological innovation because of lawsuits and fear of lawsuits.

"We figured out how to make a Quidditch ball and are looking at investors. Oh wait, we can't sell this, someone might shove it up his butt and sue us for the injury it caused."

It's the reason you buy an extension cord and there's these stupid white stickers on them pointing out the possible hazards. It's why when you buy a screwdriver, it tells you not to shove it in your ear. It's the reason why your new lawnmower has a sticker that advises you not to pick it up while it's still running so you can use it to trim your hedges. And it's the reason why a fishing lure company has to spend an extra $15,000 a year printing labels, warning people not to put the lure in their mouth.

People have done these things and it may be in the food, but there seems to be a mass stupidity going on and the lawyers are making a fortune off of it and we're paying for it with higher priced goods or lack there of.

Yeah, it's a crap trend.

It specially bothers me the way that people are too afraid to help one another now.

People don't give first aid now because there were a lot of cases where people who gave CPR and saved somebody's life were sued later on because they cracked a rib while doing it.

It's impossible to find volunteers to work with the likes of youth groups, because everybody is too afraid of getting sued for some kind of improper behaviour if they work with children.

There is so much red tape that nobody can get on with anything, because they know if they miss a step somebody will sue them for it.

You think its bad now- if we get a democratic president it will quadruple. The dems are the party of the tort attorneys.

It doesn't annoy me that people do it but it annoys me that courts go along with it.

Just a sign of the times where the people who have pride and morals lose against the unscrupulous.

It is because of this trend that we suffer from so much "Health & Safety" dictums. if we didn't have a compensation culture and lived in an adult society things would improve.

Andy
Yes, although I don't believe more compensation is being awarded, just that more people are trying and for ever pettier things.

I am truly sick of it. If I had the money I would start suing everyone who puts forward a frivolous case on the grounds of loosing faith in humanity and the stress it causes me. I even think I might win one.
