Can your company whom you are employed by use sub contract labour to do a job and not find work for you while using sub contract labour?

I am not being paid but kept on the books, so basically Im sitting at home waiting for a call off my employers while they sub contractors doing the work instead, I only get paid for work I do, if there is no work there is no money.

I believe so yes. When I broke my leg a few years ago, my company got a temporary electrician to do some of my work whilst I was off work. Indeed, he was still there for a few weeks when I returned, but I accepted this because the company would have struggled to maintain plant and equipment had they not employed him. It was only a temporary measure though, and even I and my colleagues endorsed it and assisted the other guy.
I think if you have a busy period at work, or are expecting to be busy, it would be prudent to employ other temporary staff. I think Trade Unions may scoff at this, but what may benefit the company must also usually benefit the employees. |

From what you say it appears that you have a "zero hours contract" and may not have the same employment rights as those employees with more usual contracts of employment.

It depends on your contract. Your legal rights are the same whether you are in a union or not.
