We moved in to our current house quite a few years ago and we still get post for the previous occupants. Are we legally obliged to forward their mail?

No you are not legally obliged to do so, however after moving into a house a few years back the previous tenant had left a lot of debt which companies were trying to insist on coming to the house to get money we kept sending them back saying not at this address. We finally found the new address of the previous tenants and informed the company so they would stop harassing us. |

We still get that now. I just write on the envelope 'not at this address since... then the date you moved in' and then I pop it back in the post box.

I would think that the postman should know by now the person doesn't live there. I would go down to the post office file a complaint or what ever you have to do to let them know and if it still keeps coming throw it in the trash. If the people didn't give a change then they probally just didn't want someone to find them. |

No, you are not required to forward someone else's mail. You could simply write "Not at this address" on it and leave it for the carrier, or you could just throw it out. |

There must be some sort of law which obliges you to get the previous owner's mail.
Probably not is my answer. |

Mark it 'NOT KNOWN AT THIS ADDRESS' and stick it back in the post box. |

I don't think we are, though its common courtesy as its free send a letter back. I'm sure its more likely that its illegal to give someone their mail by delivering it ourselves (even if they only live across the road) which is silly. |
