Against. You don't have to sympathize with criminals or want them to avoid terrible punishments for terrible crimes to ask if the death penalty prevents or even reduces crime, to look at alternatives and to think about the risks of executing innocent people. Your question deserves facts with credible sources, not sound bites.
128 people on death rows have been released with proof that they were wrongfully convicted. DNA, available in less than 10% of all homicides, can’t guarantee we won’t execute innocent people.
The death penalty doesn't prevent others from committing murder. No reliable study shows the death penalty deters others. Homicide rates are higher in states and regions that have it than in those that don’t.
We have a good alternative, life without parole, on the books in 48 states. It means what it says. Life without parole costs less than the death penalty.
The death penalty is much more expensive than life in prison, mostly because of the upfront costs of legal process which is supposed to prevent executions of innocent people. (upfront=before and during the initial trial)
The death penalty isn't reserved for the worst crimes, but for defendants with the worst lawyers. It doesn't apply to people with money. When is the last time a wealthy person was on death row, let alone executed?
The death penalty doesn't necessarily help families of murder victims. Murder victim family members have testified that the drawn-out death penalty process is painful for them and that life without parole is an appropriate alternative.
Problems with speeding up the process. Over 50 of the innocent people released from death row had already served over a decade. Speed up the process and we will execute innocent people.

I love it, it gets rid of the trash like Tim McVeigh. My only problem with the DP is that it takes forever to actually get them onto a gurney. I'd prefer they bring back the hangman or the rack. |

I'm for the death penalty because 99% of the time that person chose to murder an innocent person, or rape and murder. So yes, I'm all for consequences for your actions. |

it depends coz like some people myt get the blame for things that wernt actually them n then wt if they killed for it... then that means that they will have been killed for nothing |

Im kind of in the middle. If a person receives the death penelty they wont suffer in jail but if they were to have commited a vicious and wernt given a death penelty then i would be mad. |

I'm against it because even if they killed someone is a life for a life a good punishment plus alot of people would rather be dead then have life in prison, so they are just letting them off easy. |

I am for it in some cases. There are murderers writing books and getting praises in prison for their horrible crimes, even writing about how they did their crimes and the satisfaction it gave them I don't think the worst criminals should be allowed to live, sadistic ones anyway |

Taxpayers have to pay for every aspect of an inmate from the time he enters prison to the time he is set free and sometimes a little afterwards. Now if you multiply that across the many inmates in the prison systems you get a great life (meals, entertainment, sleep etc) for the inmates paid for by us. So the death Penalty removes this burden and also removes someone who should never be in society. Thats just the way I think of it. I feel really bad for someone accused and sentenced to death for a crime he didn't commit. But my sorrow won't do him any good. Its a good thing when someone who deserves it does die. |

the death penalty is there for the worst of the worst. I say we should go back to hanging. its cheap and easy. |

if they killed someone they should have the favor returned, if they molested someone they should have their junk removed. the death penalty in my eyes is not letting them have the ability to live on. to keep someone in prison for eternity is very expensive, would you rather pay for someone to stay in prison their whole life, or just pay for the death penalty and get it over with? |

First of all, they're not only destroying families, they're destroying lives. The most basic human right is the right to live, and a murderer takes that away. And no matter how badly the family of the murderer might feel, I feel worse for the folks of the murdered.
I support the death penalty with every ounce of my being. |

If someone kills my innocent wife, children, or familiy, I will not let him be in the world. I know that it sounds horrible, but I think that it is not fair that killer is alive and victims are dead. But it is really hard to determine whether we should give death penalty or not. |

Completely against! I'm a pre-law student. It does not deter. It is severely discriminatory against minorities, especially since they’re given no competent legal counsel defense in many cases. It’s a system that has to be perfect. You cannot execute one innocent person. No system is perfect. And to top it off, for those of you who are interested in the economics it, it costs more to pursue a capital case toward execution than it does to have full life imprisonment without parole.
And I don't think Jesus would be for the death penalty either! |
