I believe the victim's family should decide the fate of the murderer.

I was pro-death penalty for a long time, but I have changed my stance over the years, for several reasons:

1. By far the most compelling is this: Sometimes the legal system gets it wrong. Look at all the criminals who are being released after years of imprisonment because they were exonerated by DNA evidence. Unfortunately, DNA evidence is not available in most cases. No matter how rare it is, the government should not risk executing one single innocent person.

Really, that should be reason enough for most people. If you need more, read on:

2. Because of the extra expense of prosecuting a DP case and the appeals process (which is necessary - see reason #1), it costs taxpayers MUCH more to execute prisoners than to imprison them for life.

3. The deterrent effect is questionable at best. Violent crime rates are actually higher in death penalty states. This may seem counterintuitive, and there are many theories about why this is (Ted Bundy saw it as a challenge, so he chose Florida – the most active execution state at the time – to carry out his final murder spree). Personally, I think it has to do with the hypocrisy of taking a stand against murder…by killing people. The government becomes the bad parent who says, ‘do as I say, not as I do.’

4. There’s also an argument to be made that death is too good for the worst of our criminals. Let them wake up and go to bed every day of their lives in a prison cell, and think about the freedom they DON’T have, until they rot of old age. When Ted Bundy was finally arrested in 1978, he told the police officer, “I wish you had killed me.â€

5. The U.S. government is supposed to be secular, but for those who invoke Christian law in this debate, you can find arguments both for AND against the death penalty in the Bible. For example, Matthew 5:38-39 insists that violence shall not beget violence. James 4:12 says that God is the only one who can take a life in the name of justice. Leviticus 19:18 warns against vengeance (which, really, is what the death penalty amounts to). In John 8:7, Jesus himself says, "let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

If someone kills,
They themselves should be killed.

What gives murderers the right to take someones life
And then have to do a petty 10 years inside -
Which can be halved for '' Good Behaviour ''

Mostly against it, however I do think the death penalty ought to be reserved for the most heinous of crimes.

I absolutely believe in the death penalty. I think that the biggest issue with the death penalty today (or at least in my State - CT) is that it takes too long to actually execute someone.
With the way technology is today and how advanced the CJ System has become; we have a less likely chance of executing the wrong person; thus a major concern of those opposed to the death penalty.
As a professor fo CJ, I ask my students to look at things from both perspectives - yes, it would be hard to be for something if you were punishing somoene you love; but what if someone brutally raped and / or murdered your son or daughter or family member; someone you love?
I truly believe that is someone has been truly proven guilty and they have done some henious, horrible crime, they should be punished...our death penalty system is actually too easy...perhaps they should punished in the same manner as they had punished their victims!

I am all for it. If someone kills another person, why should they be allowed to live? They should die and let God punish them for eternal life. I know, what about the guy that executes the murderer, well, he/she is doing their job, and that is allowed by law, therefor, they are excused.
As far as rehab, um, ok, people that kill others, that rape others, and rape children, you are going to tell me they won't do it again? I don't think so, let them be wiped off the face of the earth, so we can make room for people who won't commit those types of crime. The planet is over-populated, so why not eliminate the garbage that are on this planet.

To any of those people who are against, would you want someone like Ted Bundy as your next door neighbor? How about a serial rapist? I think you would change your minds if they moved in beside you.
I know, life in jail, blah, blah, blah, and have them live, after killing or raping several innocent people, I don't think so.

FOR IT why spend millions on trying to rehabilate murderers when all they wil do when they get out is some other violent crime or let them get a free ride in prison for the next 50-60 years because some states are to chicken to get rid of them for good. I say let them die and go where God puts them!

As long as they are tried and found guilty beyond a doubt. Of the many people I knew that were in the system (not for murder but other things) they got a slight slap of the wrist and went back with a job, home, and support groups waiting. Then they did the same thing and are still doing the same thing 10 years later. Some people never learn. Kill the murders before they breed and make more.
