there were some charges against me in 2005 that were later on dropped.
will that record always be there? is there something that could be done to erase it? when job searching, how far back di they reserch your background?

I have spent the last 3 months researching and testing public record search sites for an online consumer review site (http://www.CompleteReviews.net ). Based on what I have seen, I can tell you that the more in-depth background check services will likely find criminal records from 2005. I have never heard of a time limit on when those records are erased and I kind of doubt it exists unfortunately. Where you might have hope is that, some of the court systems are not as "online" as others and so your records may not be accessible to the newer online systems. Most companies use online background check services now for speed and convenience.
If you want to know for sure if your records can be found, you can run a check on yourself. This is normally pretty expensive but I found a company offering unlimited searches for an intro rate of $4.95 for a 4 day pass. Most criminal charges are dropped by the time u turn 18 unless u wre charged as an adult. If you were an adult then the info on your case stay on your record. Your only solution would be to get the information expunged. That also depends on what the charges are. If they are serious enough that they have to stay on your record, then the expungement wont be honored. Different jobs have different time limits they go back. For Law Enforcement, they go back as far as they can....and you would have to disclose that information to them anyway if they ask. If its anything outside of law enforcement, or Law, then if you get it expunged, you dont have to tell them anything about your past worries. Also, if they dont ask, dont tell. |
