Bank Fee and change to my account...Legal?

Bank Fee and change to my account...Legal?

I was just checking my everyday account with NAB....anyway I had previously (and successfully) requested a block on my account to be overdrawn. Apparently last month I overdrew my account twice, then they slapped me with a $30 penalty, then charged me interest on the whole amount, including the penatly fee. Firstly, is it legal for them to change my account to being able to be withdrawn without telling me? Secondly, is a $30 fee legal? I thought there was a new law about banks only being able to charge what it actually costs for them and thirdly, how do I go about getting my $30 and interest paid back? I tried ringing the customer service centre in the hours mentioned in an email they sent me regarding Easter opening hours but even that was faulty. Thanks in advance :)

It has nothing to do with a cheque - I used to not be able to spend money if it wasnt there - it would show up with an error saying "Contact bank" or "Insufficient funds" all I did was purchase some dinner from red rooster off my eftpos card...nothing to do with a cheque, Im in Australia btw

If it was due to a debit card, file a small claim court suit. They will (most likely) take it off.
If the overdraft was caused by you writing a check, then you are liable.

You're lucky it was the bank, and that they only charged you $30. Had they bounced the checks, the merchants would be after you for more, and possibly filing criminal charges.

Pay the fee, and keep your checkbook up to date.

These fees are quite normal here in the US and there is no way to block an account from being overdrawn?
Maybe do not write checks before you have the money in the account.
Sounds like your best defense is a good offense as you are trying to blame others for your mistakes!

The bank cannot prevent your account from being overdrawn. They can only try to prevent it by denying a debit card transaction or somebody trying to cash a check at NAB.

They have know way of knowing what checks you have outstanding or if a store has run your card as a credit instead of debit.

I am certain that the charges were mention in the account agreement or in a later mailing sent to you if there was a change. So yes it is legal.

But as the other poster stated, you are lucky that you are not being insufficient check charges from another bank. Since you have no agreement with another bank, they could charge you whatever they wanted.

Wrong thoughts on your part. It is imperative that you read all of the terms and conditions of use of credit available to you. You really got off easily if $30.00 was all that you had to pay. Yes it is legal.

Some things in the banking industry has changed but those are more bank to bank than individual to bank relationships. As the consumer your role is written in as pay, pay, and pay some more. Sorry, but that is what time it is.

Limit you use of any kind of credit and pay attention to your balances and dates (due). There is emphasis on collecting as much from you as legally possible. Constrict use of such instruments.
