Been called as a witness in a defamation case

A newspaper alleged that someone had sent a text message to another party and the message was sent via a phone registered to me that I gave to a friend I@m no longer in contact with.
Now the said newspaper wants to call me as a witness in the case? Where do I stand in this? Do I have to attend? I'm a little worried the case could generate some local press which could be embarrassing to myself?

If you received a subpoena to appear for deposition or testify at trial and you fail to appear, you will be in contempt of court and for that, you can be arrested. On the other hand, if someone with the newspaper simply asked you to appear, you are not required to comply. |
