Benefit fraud help... worried about a friend...?

My friend has just told me she has been reported for benefit fraud.
She had been living with her partner and baby for about a year and has been claiming income support or something similar, and also her rent and council tax are paid for her. She never reported living with her partner.
Her partners mother came over and told her this afternoon that one of her friends got given a case file (she works for the council) saying that she had been reported and has 7 days to tell the council and dwp that her partner has moved in.
What I'm wondering is, surely they would just spring this on them? And not wait around? And what is gong to happen to them?
I asked my Mother (as she used to work for the social years ago) and she said that all that will happen if they don't tell is that they will get taken to court and have to pay back all they owe in little amounts per week.
Does anyone know if this is true? Or what will happen to them?

They'll date it from when she says her partner moved in and work out how much they've overpaid her.
Of course she'll have to pay it back. It is after all, theft! |

Normally her own personal payment will be cut / reduced if the male is an earner.
Also, her rent allowance will normally be cut.
And, she will have to repay the amount, normally the social ask for an amount per week to be stopped out of her payment, for example 10 pounds, she can say no it is too much and offer 2 pound.
Before this was not a huge concern but with recent budget cuts all cases of fraud will be followed and acted on, she shouldn't be brought to court if she makes a move first.
Are you sure the source is reliable? (if his mother is working for the council maybe she hasn't seen a file but is more concerned about a possible problem in the future?) |

She will be interviewed under caution and then possibly prosecuted as it sounds as if it's quite a large sum of money. She will have to pay it all back and it won't be in small amounts. The friend who works for the Council has committed a breach of the Data Protection Act and could be sacked and prosecuted for revealing such information. Not a very nice friend you have. |

you are telling us that your friend has allowed the taxpayer to give her money every week out of their tax to help her pay for her rent and her council tax plus her gas electric and food, these tax payers are probably struggling themselves with all their bills to pay, but their tax goes to help someone like your friend. i hope she gets fined, its people like her who are bringing the country down |
