Best Way To Patent and Sell Something?

Alright, I have an item I'd like to patent and sell but the thing is I don't have a lot of money. My invention is an improvement for an existing product (since it's not yet patented I must use a fake example to protect myself).
My invention is shoelace spray that repels liquids, keeping your shoelaces nice and clean. Assuming that no product like this exists, what would be the best course of action to take?
I was thinking of something like contacting Nike or some sort of shoelace reseller and having them sell the spray for me. They obviously get a cut but it's better than nothing.
Would I need to go to Nike headquarters and talk with them in person about the spray, or would emails/phone calls be just as good? What about NDAs too?
Or what about those Invention companies that play on the commercials? Would something like that be good to do?
I know the best method would be to get a Patent Attorney, but again I don't have a lot of money.

Unfortunately, unlike copyrights, patents must be registered and they can get costly.
If you want to save some money and get your product out in the market, check out some invention/trade shows that are going on in your area or nearest metro. I am sure some of the big companies go to these trade shows to check out the new innovations out there.
I am assuming you are from the U.S. (?) so if you are, the U.S. has the "first to invent" NOT "first to file" rule. Basically means in a simple example:
So, let's say, after the trade show, someone "steals" your idea and patents it, and you find out - you have evidence that you were "first to invent" because you were at the trade show. You could bring a patent infringement action against that person.
