I am currently collecting unemployment benefits in California.
I noticed they have a training benefit program, but I don't think my schooling will meet all of the guidelines.
If I check box 5 (begin training or school) on the unemployment form YES, could this stop my benefits?
How long are benefits now, 6,9, or 12 months?

Yes. You have to be available for work if your school doesn't meet the guidelines. From the EDD website:
The California Unemployment Insurance Code has no provisions expressly rendering students, as such, unavailable for work. However, an inference of unavailability for work does arise when a claimant is attending school during hours customarily worked in business and industry.

If you enroll in school on you own, you could loose your benefit. If you want training, get it THROUGH the EDD. I lost a job while attending school part time at night, and had to jump through hoops to get unemplyment, but did. |
