Can't people make there own decisions about abortion?

For the same reason that the government doesn't let us make our own decisions about murder, rape, theft, drunk driving, etc... The government makes laws to protect people from other people. Humans are not known for their peaceful nature. Our freedoms can only be excercised if they do not directly impede the rights of others.
Are fetuses human? Medical textbooks and testimony say yes, many prochoice advocates say yes, fetal homocide laws say yes (Fetal homocide laws exist in at least 36 states, at least 19 of these states extend rights to fetuses in the earliest stages of development, who become victims of violent crime.
Why do these fetuses get rights, but not the ones who are aborted?

The official Senate report reached this conclusion:

"Physicians, biologists, and other scientists agree that conception marks the beginning of the life of a human being - a being that is alive and is a member of the human species. There is overwhelming agreement on this point in countless medical, biological, and scientific writings."

If fetuses have been recognized as human beings that are "alive" and "a member of the human species" by a report in the Senate, by the medical communtiy, and others.... Why can't we protect these humans from other humans as well?

The Supreme Court decided that the woman can make that choice so it is legal for people to think for themselves. Their is a large segment of society who think they should make the choices for others.

because most people will kill baby's just because they cant wear the latest fashions in clothes<Whats wrong with birth control pills and such things as that?why let your urge to screw end up killing an innocent life?and where does the constitution or bill of Rights say abortions are OK?i guess it depends on what your definition of is IS dosent it?killing baby's gets a lot of votes from the most bases of people,who want a quick fix for their own irresponsibility's,most lawyers will do what ever it takes to be famous and make bigger bucks

well murder isn't right...ever. if everyone could make their own decision on who they wanted to murder do you think that would be right?

My stand: abortion should be unregulated at 1st trimester, with increasing restrictions the further the pregnancy goes. Of course, if the child is going to lead a life full of pain due to some defect, or the mother's life is endangered, or if the child was conceived due to incest or rape, the option to abort should always be open.
