Can I get unemployment if I quit my job because of a family issue?

I have been working retail jobs for the last five years and I am currently in college part time. Recently I found out my mom has cancer. Since the situation isn't looking good, I asked my employer for some time off. They only gave me four days, which they said was the maximum. I explained to them that I don't want to quit, but I am very upset and need to be there for my mother as well as pass my final exams for the semester. I strongly feel that I need time off. Could this make me eligible for unemployment?

* agree with mnwoman... that is the truth!

if you want unemployment, you need to be "let go" or "fired."

there are a few ways to get time off:

(1) go to your doctor and explain the situation...if your mood is not in a good place and you can convince a doctor, you can retrieve a doctor's note, which must be honored by your work

(2) if you just don't show up for work, rather than quitting, there's a chance that (i) you may get fired!!! and therefore get unemployment or (ii) your job may still be waiting for you when you come back

Usually when you quit for any reason you are not eligible for unemployment. Sorry to hear about you mom and Good Luck
