I want to post a music video on youtube, but I don't want to get it removed because of copyright laws. WIll it be legal and ok with youtube if I post a music video but write in the description something like "This Video Is Owned By Zomba Records Inc."?? Or is that still illegal
I would think that as long as I'm giving the company/artist who owns the video credit, everything should be fine, but i'm not sure. So as long as i'm giving the owner credit, will I have any problems with you tube? or is it still considered illegal and get removed by you tube?

i would post anything and the idea of giving credit is a good idea, here is the deal, youtube is great promotion yet some companies don't like it, you will never be charged with copyright especially if you give credit.
google piratebay torrents, a torrent sharing P2P network, they had some go to prison recently oversees for coppyright infingement, but i think they started charging money for service.
here is a youtube lawsuit, the movie was idiocracy, they pulled clips of the movie off but hey it was funny.

technically, no it isn't legal. Copyright law covers the copying and/or distribution/broadcasting of protected content. Posting it on youtube certainly qualifies. The disclaimers don't make it legal as it is still a broadcasting of the work whether you acknowledge the original author or not. (This is why even those short clips of Letterman or Family Guy and whatnot get removed often even though they are short and people put all those disclaimers on them).
However, realistically speaking, it won't usually be enforced since the copyright holder must files a dispute to youtube. They just don't have any interest in doing that for a music video since they want the song to be heard and purchased.
In sum, not technically legal, but not likely to be enforced in the case of a music video. You can feel comfortable in posting it. |
