Can a college professor do that? Is he really God?
|
I was told a story today about a professor at my university.
This guy thinks he's God. He's been actually quoted saying it several times. In his class, he does whatever he wants. Among many of his antics, there is one that upset me the most. Supposedly, the guy doesn't let you come into class if you get there 1 minute late and tells you to leave if you try to get in.
I may have to take a class with him, but I think I won't put up with this. Can he really kick you out like that? I mean, I'm paying for the class and HE is the one providing ME a service, not the other way around.
The guy is on a power trip and I'm afraid he's going to make me get in trouble because I have a really short fuse... I'm really interested in knowing if it is actually "legal" to do what he does.

Cant come in late? You must be new to college. Thats actually very common. Better get used to it. |

While not many professors don't proclaim themselves God, there are many who will not let any late students into the classroom and they are allowed to do so. I have had professors who will lock the door at the beginning of class so that no one else can get in.
The professors that I have had do this do it to promote promptness. In their own words, it's a way of preparing a person for work and employment. It wouldn't accepted for an employee to show up late to work and they'll usually be punished for it. In that same way, some professors choose to punish late arrivers. |

Regarding your statement: "I mean, I'm paying for the class and HE is the one providing ME a service, not the other way around." This self-centered attitude makes me sick. It is revolting.
I never understood where students think that just because they pay for a class that it entitles them to behave anyway they want. You paying for the class only entitles you to a seat in the class, where you are expected to behave, observing proper decorum and the rules set forth. You paying for the class is NOT a license to behave poorly, to show up late, to leave early, to talk, to read the news paper, to be a distraction to others.
No, the teacher is NOT providing you a service. He is offering you the opportunity to learn. If you cannot accept the rules he sets, then do him and everyone else in the class a favor by not taking it.
As for him calling himself God, he probably resorted to doing so out of frustration from repeated sophomoric and disrespectful behavior of the students. It is his way (perhaps in poor taste) of letting the students know they do not dictate the rules of the classroom.
As much as you think he needs to get over himself, you need to get over yourself. I hope you are not the type to run home to mommy and daddy and whine about God not being nice and kowtowing to you. |

You can complain to the department and school administration once he does it to you. You'll probably be disappointed but you can try. |

When I was in school, I found that over half of what other students told me about professors was total crap.
Usually they have or have had a problem with that professor so they are totally biased.
Every time I went into the class with an open mind, I never had problems. |

Welcome to college. You will have you share of profs who think they're god, some will be flaming idiots, others will be totally incompetent. Yet when they control your grade, they might as well be god.
Learn to deal with it.
As for being late to class, if a class starts at 1;00 PM, you are expected to be in your seat and settled in at 1;00 PM, and 1:01 PM doesn't cut it.
As for your short fuse, learn to keep your mouth shut or YOU will be in deep doodoo, not the prof. |

College is not high school. By the time one reaches college age, it is reasonable to assume that one is an adult - or at least mature enough to come to class on time.
People who come late to class are rude and they are disruptive.
While you are in his classroom, you will either put up with his antics or you won't. If you won't, then I'm sure you will be asked to leave....and he has every right to boot your immature butt out. |

He's going to make you get in trouble???? You'll put up with whatever the prof says as they are IN CHARGE of their classroom. I lock my classroom doors. You are the one that sounds like they want the world to revolve around them. GROW UP. |

If he think's he's actually God, he might be crazy. |

wow...
well... i dont think it's illegal b/c there is this one guy named Jose Luis de Jesus who claims to be Jesus. Basically his "followers" showers him with money & gifts. And he also says how there's no such thing as sin or a devil and etc. Which is total b/s! There's more info here:
http://www.rickross.com/reference/creciendo/creciendo4.html
anyways, nobody does anything to this "jesus" so sorry!
but im not totally sure if it's really legal or not, but it's just a guess... |

No professor has to let you stay in a class when you are late. It is rude and disruptive to the rest of the class; everyone else paid too. Oh, and FYI, you don't pay your professors for a service; you pay your university for the chance to learn. The professor owes a responsibility to the university as an entity, not you personally.
If it helps you to think about it, you pay for an airplane ticket too, but you still have to show up for the flight ontime if you want to fly. You are paying for the opportunity to participate, but your participation is dependent on following the guidelines he sets for his class.
But, if you are genuinely concerned that you might have a problem getting to his class on a regular basis for a legitimate reason (like you have another class that is on the other side of campus), talk to him about it. He might be tough, but even God gives forgiveness if the reason is good enough.
p.s. Not only is his action legal, but actually encouraged in some universities. |

Yes...they can keep you from entering a class late because it disrupts the class. But because you're paying for the class...you can file a complaint against this professor for some of the things he does and says. Implying that he's God is offensive as well as inaccurate. He should stick to the subject he's teaching and leave his huge ego at home. As for your "short fuse"..part of being an adult is taking responsibility for controlling anger. If I were you, knowing what you know...I would see if another professor teaches this class that you need. Even if you have to take that one class at a regional campus, you may get more out of it than being taught by this pompous idiot who is on a power trip with an ego to match |

Ask not to be put in his class, and if you do, insist on a transfer to another teacher. They should do it, since you are paying for the class. |

You would have to talk with a principal or someone higher up to see if that is really legal. As far as thinking he is God, it seems rather common a college professor thinks highly of himself because he has been doing the job for years and he gets paid more than a teacher would in High School or Junior High. What they do not realize is you are paying his salary so in a political stand point of view. You should have some say so. |

No Not if your paying for the class and your only a few minutes late. You should report it to the person at the Head of the School. You might want to get your money back if this is the case. |

Keyword is TENURED and that should Not happen. If they are rotten instructors they do not contribute to the educational purposes of Colleges .They Do think they are god and I had one who completely lost his mind and was sitting in a darkened room, sunglasses on..
Try going to ratemyprofessor.com and tell those who have taken his class to go there as well and report it. You can also start a petition to the Dean's Office. Students have Rights too. |

People like this guy go on like this because people are afraid to stand up to them. I had a teacher a few years ago who was really hard on everyone she was so bad she used to make people cry every single day. It ended up so that half the class left and switched to the other class with a different teacher. She took a serious dislike to me because I asked for help when I was struggling ( I have dyslexia) but I just stood up to her she called me out after class one day for a comment I'd made when she'd made my friend cry.(I have a short fuse too!) I chewed her out of it in front of half the school in Irish (it was Irish class). But I was very PC in the way I did it, she lost her rag and began to curse at me. So I had the upper hand when she tried to take the matter further in disciplinary actions. But after that incident she had huge respect for me because I wouldn't take her crap she never dared to say boo to me after that! I'd say it could be a similar situation with your professor, if you show your strength he wont pick on you because he'll know he can't get away with it. Just think carefully about how you do it!! :D |

He probably has tenure. That makes it very difficult to get rid of him. Just another example of how academia can be out of touch with reality. |

Report him to the school authorities and show him he is not God.
God can submit to no one.
Then, tell him is is a lowest kind of man.
Humble him. |
