Unfortunately, unemployment is not going to work here since typically, it doesnt kick in until after the first week. If he has any sick days accumulated, he may be able to use those. But times are tough for lots of companies and this is not uncommon, unfortunately. |

It's called a layoff, he may not have a job in January.Obviously the company is in trouble.I feel for your plight, but it may be needed for the companies survival.Good luck and Happy Holidays |

Yes -- companies can set their own hours and days of operation. |

Of course they can - it's called a temporary layoff. Your husband needs to go file for and collect unemployment during the layoff period. |

Be happy he's got a week off! He's not losing his job.Just think of all the other people laid off with no return. If the income from that week is a hindrance to your budget, then he should take the time during that week to seek other employment that he would be happy with, or do a little side work if available for someone elderly. |

Yes, this is within their rights to do so. Be thankful that he has a job and will go back to work on the 6th. Many are not as fortunate. |

Look at it this way, would you rather that or he lose his job altogether.
Where i work in the UK we have all gone from a 5 day working week to a 4 day working week, that way we all keep our jobs and no redundancy's.
my Dad was also told to take a week between the holidays, however my dad has unused time off so he took that instead. |

Of course they can do it...many companies do, especially around the holidays. Didn't you see in the news that Chrysler just announced their shutting production plants for a month? A company here in NJ (Atlantic States) is closing for 3+ weeks for the 3rd time this year. your husband just needs to go and file for unemployment for the time the business is closed. |

Yes they can, and have done so, it was on TV the other day. The days you don't get paid for, you can put in for unemployment compensation! |

Yes they can.
Are they closing to celebrate the Holiday? or because there is no work? Depends upon the wording
Could make a difference ... If hubbywas hired to work full time and there is no work then he might be eligible for unemployment benefits for some of those days .. Check with your local employment office. |

seems like it would be a lay-off and he should be able to collect unemployment. try and see. you only have to be off for a week to collect unemployment. if he doesn't have any reg. vacation at that time normally I don't think they can just make some up and force you to take it. file for unemployment and call it a lay-off because thats what it sounds like. |
