Can a school discipline you for....?

I was wondering if a high school can punish you for something done outside of school propriety. I mean like writing a letter to the editor about double standards in punishment. If it is done outside of school, can you get in trouble? it is just opinions, if you want more info, check out my question called "Letter to the editor about unfair school system". that will tell the story.... thanks

It is a public high school. I'm just wondering if they can connect the whole being about the school to getting me in trouble for blowing their cover that they are all hypocrites that have students in the school distict. its a small town, and most teachers have kids in the district, even the principle has a kid thats in high school

Students can be disciplined for speech occurring outside of school, at least when there is a sufficient connection between the speech and the school. For an interesting example, in a recent case called Frederick v. Morse, students were disciplined after they displayed a banner that said "bong hitz 4 jesus" at the olympic torch rally.

Their speech was not protected because it was, according to the court, speech endorsing illegal drug use and because the students were released from school to attend (this was the sufficient connection to school). Your speech, on the other hand, seems like "political" speech, more like that in another famous case called Tinker v. Des Moines where students wore black arm bands to protest the Vietnam war. In political speech cases, as long as the speech does not create a disruption at school, it is probably okay.

Yes. If it is connected to school in anyway, then yes theoretically. It depends on your schools district's rules and regulations.

I know that if it is a felony they can but Im not so sure in your case. Plus, you didn't say if it was private school or public. If it is a private school they are lucky, they can boot for any reason.

No, you cannot get in trouble and 2, you have the First Amendment to stand behind.

Life isn't fair, it is a shame that kids are babied and told they are all winners. Its better you learn this now instead of when you go whining the same way to a future boss and get fired for it. Move on, so what if they got the same punishment for something, YOU perceive as being worse.

Why do you even care?

Remember you have limited rights as a minor, you do not have full constitutional rights.
