Can a school force you to clean a bus?

Basically I left a crushed arizona can on the bus. Bus driver claims someone was 'almost injured' when he should have seen it and picked it up in the first place. Now he wants me staying after to clean the bus for a few days. I understand punishment for littering but is it fair to say I am at fault for nearly injuring a child?
