What are their rights, being 14 years old. My friend lives in a remote area, apart from every one of her friends, with close to no friends or social life where she is right now, and she is constantly depressed and crying. Her mother refused half the occasions she had to come visit her friends during school days off. She stays with her mother, her father lives elsewhere. If the mother protests, is there a way to legally overrule the protest?

Well, I don't know how the legal system works in Canada, but I'll assume it's similar to America's legal system.
As a minor, your friend does not really have many options. As her mother is her legal guardian, it is perfectly within her rights to control when and where your friend can go, UNLESS the mother's actions are causing direct harm to your friends physical or emotional state. At this point, the Child Protective Services (or the Canadian equivalent), will get involved, investigate the case, and possibly reorganize her father's visiting rights or send her off to a orphanage if no other living relatives are willing to take care of her.
Alternately, she can sue for emancipation from her mother, but this is very difficult, as it is hard to find a lawyer who will work dilligently on a relatively low-key and low-paying case. |

Not unless the under age girl is beaten severely enough to produce absolute proof. And that's just to consider the possibility of entering a foster home, she won't just get permission to go wherever she wants. She will be able to leave legally when she is 18 years old. |
