They are nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate. Once confirmed, they have their job for life, subject to being impeached by Congress.
In reality, to become a federal judge, you need to get the Senator from your state to recommend you to the President. Especially if the Senator is from the same political party as the president. |

Federal judges are appointed by the President, with the "Advice and consent" of the Senate.
In practice this means the President names someone that he wants to appoint, and the Senate votes whether or not to confirm him.
