The situation is that I work in a care job that has a zero hour contract, I applied to work in another care job (I wasn't poached or anything it was off of my own back) in order to get some more hours, only another 10 or so and still keep my main job, as I do about 35 there (and there isn't the option for more at a time I can do).
I was accepted for this job on another zero hour contract, references went through and at this point my employer said that if I take the job with the other company I would have to hand in my notice. Effectively saying that I cannot do both the jobs at the same time. Can they do this? I have scanned my job contract and employee handbook and can find nothing covering this, where do I stand from a legal standpoint?
One concern is say I do get another job, with it being a zero hour contract, they could reduce my hours, forcing me to quit from a financial prospective. Proving them doing this would be nigh impossible.
Any advice on this situation would be appreciated? Do I sit down with my managers and explain all this, (when I asked why they said I just couldn't) and press for a more official reason. Or do I just keep quiet, not taking the other job? As its not an option to take that job only as they cannot offer full time hours.
