Can my parents take my money and property from me?

Im getting a C in school, and that's the only reason they have for confiscating my money and possessions. Can they simply take my money and property, use the money, throw away the property, and not refund me except through what they are bound by law to do. (e.g. food, clothing, and shelter)?

In fact, if you're under 18, your money and property is most likely not actually yours, it's theirs. They can do what they want as long as they're your guardians. |

You do not mention your age or state, but here are the rules for illinois.
Every cent you earn and every bit of property you 'own' legally belongs to your parents.
You are allowed to work only with parental consent. You are allowed to use the money you earn at your job (that your parents allow you to work) to purchase anything only with parental consent.
In order to have the right to hold property in your name and to keep any and all earnings without your parents having the right to confiscate any of it, you would have to be emancipated by the court. Don't even ask if that is possible. It's not. You have no grounds that would recommend to a court that you need to be emancipated and if there is any objection from the parents or guardian of the minor, the petition is denied.
That is the legally correct answer.
ETA: Sorry. I just saw that you already are aware of the fact that you are not a viable candidate for emancipation.

Legally, yes, morally, I think it stinks. I could understand grounding or some other punishment until the grade comes up, but they are the parents and it is their call. Good luck. |
