Can one kill a Police Officer and walk away free?

He was tried by two juries in San Diego, and the juries did not convict, but yielded to a conclusion of self-defense. He didn't simply walk away free, for he was arrested, put on trial, prosecution fought hard, defense fought hard, city was divided, and jury gave him the keys to walk. Afterward he lived a troubled life, in and out of trouble, and he was found dead by suicide in 2002 - few wept.

The juries (He was tried twice) reviewed all the evidence and ruled that he acted in justified self-defense in the face of illegal use of deadly force by the cops.

Juries almost NEVER rule that a cop-shooting is self-defense. The facts in this case were truly egregious. The cops were way out of line, and Penn was within his legal rights in defending himself.

Penn, at the time, was an unarmed 16 year old with no criminal past, who was being brutally beaten by two cops to punish him for "answering back" during a traffic stop (which was an illegal stop to start with - pure "driving while black") when he pulled one of the cops guns out of it's holster and fired. He then jumped in the car and raced away, going over another officer. He then went to the police station immediately and reported what had happened.

The jury found the shooting to be justified self-defense, and I agree with them.

However, I believe I would want to have sometime around midnight

We had an female officer killed sometime back, a much appreciated black female officer, a friend of mine told me the only reason the guy is alive now is because of a TV camera.

Penn was eventually acquitted (it took years) because his lawyer successfully convinced two juries that he acted in the face of extreme excess force on the part of the police. I don't remember all the specifics, but this was certainly not an open and **** case, nore did it involve a normal situation.

In effect, he convinced the juries that his only hope of protecting his life was to act as he did.

He killed himself in 2002, btw.

I doubt it, you get in more trouble for assaulting or killijng a cop, than for a civilian. While there are more bad cops than there are good,they do not deserve to be killed, and the same can be said for the civilian population

No, you get caught, go to jail for murder, and never get out. unless you miraculously gain parole, which isnt likely because it's a great offense to kill a police officer. Also the laws are tighter now then in 1984.

well,i am actually surprised that people still talk about the rodney king BEFORE the rodney king! and YES! i am THE krystal smith that had sagon penn aquitted. I was 13 or 12 at the time and terified for me and my familys lives. this happened in our yard and on a bright clear sunny day after church.we were outside talking about peircing each others ears with a needle and a clothespin,....the police cut all that short! that incident actually taught me alot!!!! it taught me exactly how to deal with the police....DONT! Not if i dont have to. You know, i really want to make a movie about this story.the world has no idea of the real story nor what happend after this happend,while thr trial was going on,nor when it would turn nightime and we couldnt sleep scared that they(the police) was always watching,always parked in our yards,trying to scare us into not testifing.BUT GOD ALWAYS HAS A PLAN!and do you know im still here,justice was served and this is a story that really needs to be told the right way! because this was one that was SUPER SWEPTED UNDER THE RUG!
