There are some things that are state responsibilities. And some things that are local responsibilities. A whacked out chairperson of the board of education could do it, but not a whacked out president.
Good of you to ask, rather than believe every bit of malarky out there.
By the way, I am referring to the generic President. Anyone who wants the job has got to be whacked out. |

I think it's a state education board decision, the President can't influence it. |

I went to a school that saturdays (mon-fri are full days, saturdays were half days). It was useless because people don't really 'take in' anything during the weekends.
If a president can waste $275 million a day in the war in Iraq, I think the president can make kids go to school for an extra 2 days a week. |

You don't even need to worry about the president, your school district could do it if they wanted to. |

I'm finding out by watching our current president that he is doing whatever he wants. That includes things that were "illegal" for past presidents. So he is basically getting away with it.
I do not have actual knowledge that Hilary will change the school week, but I believe she would have the power to do that. It would not be in her best interest though. And it would not be in the best interest for people living in this country.
You have probably heard a rumor from people who do not want her to be president. Now don't get me wrong. I would love to have a woman as president. Just not THAT woman. |

She isn't going to do that. She will kill your parents though. |

Being the President of the USA can give you a lot of power on certain things but I don't think people would allow that. Think about it....do you think parents would like their kids to go to school on weekends? Most of parents work during the week, so I don't think that's going to happened because we will not see our kids 7 days a week. NO! |

Schools are ran by state government not federal. However federal funding is available to school systems for those who take on federal education programs. But no, the President does not have that power. |

She might be able to try to do it as a Senator of NY, but then it would only apply to NY. As a president she could not make the nation change that much. Schools are State run. The president can not control the state directly. So No Hilary can not do this as President, I doubt if she could do it as a Senator.
Tell your friend that she could make your friends hair style or color illegal in this country to get back at her! |

THE PRESIDENT CANNOT MAKE CHANGES LIKE THAT...BUT THERE ARE EXTENSIVE PROCEDURES FOR AND CHANGE OF LAW FOR THE PRESIDENT TO FOLLOW...... |

As "W" demonstrated, a president can get away with anything they want. |

It's very doubtful that a president would vote for 6 day weeks of school. There are many religions that worship on Saturdays that would make this difficult to pass. However, I think that making school year-round (there are still seasonal breaks) is a brilliant idea. American education is still set up on the agricultural schedule, which makes no sense in modern times. |

They need to pass a referendum for a decision of that magnitude. And I highly doubt it will pass, so schools gonna be the same. |

In short - no.
This is just an ugly rumor, and you should tell your friend to actually do her research before she decides to start spouting things about candidates. The same things were said about Michael Dukakis in 1988, and none of it was true (there were enough bad things about him that were totally true that I never understood why people felt the need to make things up anyway!). |

The federal government can set policies that become binding on state's who set broad policy for local school systems and control a fair amount of funding. Presidents can't unilaterally set policy - it would have to be approved by the congress. "No Child Left Behind" is a Bush mandate.
In many cities schools already offer Saturday programs for children who need additional services. If a child did poorly he/she may be required to attend such classes. In some cases other children can attend if they want additional help with subject matter.
Requiring all students to attend on Saturday would cost a fortune. I can't see anyone agreeing to pay the salary costs that would go along with it. |

They can submit a bill for it. |

if the president really wanted to do this, and could convince congress to do this. then yeah it could happen. yes schools and their funding is reliant on the state level government but national laws trump state laws my friend. i dont think this will happen though. |
|

tay

pssh no....even if she tried to she would have to go through the congress and i highly doubt they would except that... |
|

Tick T
|
only if it passes through congress
and all the states
it is VERY unlikely that it'll happen
the presidet doesnt have a lot of power, unless people vote for it. I doubt that most of america would vote for longer school.
So i'd say that it wouldnt happen |

I sure as hell hope not, because thats messed up, besides hilary clinton is one crazy Bi-a-tch you know. well later and good luck. |

Congress or the President can propose a bill. Then for it to happen, the Senate, the house of reps, and the president have to approve it.
But, in answer to you question, it could happen. |

School districts can make changes if Congress approves and Prez signs.
Don't hold your breath; not happening |

No a president cannot do that. It would have to be voted on in Congress and that wouldn't go through. |

No one will go to school on the weekends, but there is always talk about haveing school year around with no summer break. however if that was the case you would have more weeks off throughout the year like 14 or 15 one week holidays |
