Yes, you can apply for, "General Relief Assistance," at your county Department of Social Services. You maybe eligible for a small monetary benefit and food stamps, but the assistance is temporary. The temporary monetary assistance is generally for those unemployed and to give them help until finding a job, however, you may qualify for food stamps.
Employable applicants must register for work, must apply for unemployment benefits, (if eligible,) and are limited to a time limit of 3 months of assistance in a 12 month period, whether or not the months are consecutive.
Unemployable applicants must obtain verification of his/her disability, apply for SSI/SSP and/or any other disability benefits determined by the department.
Your young, able bodied, and already have a job and a place to live, (albeit temporary.) Considering the conditions of the economy right now and the problems specific to California, you will likely have a difficult time qualifying.
