Marijuana is a schedule 1 drug.. That stupidity is why it's illegal.
These are the qualifications of a schedule 1 drug:
(A) The drug or other substance has a high potential for abuse.
(B) The drug or other substance has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States.
(C) There is a lack of accepted safety for use of the drug or other substance under medical supervision.
Sure doesn't sound like pot fits that criteria to me. |

I agree with ladyliberty. Eventually, people found out that smoking weed ruins lives, so they stopped and ever since then "weed" has been illegal. In addition to that, marijuana is also classified as a toxic plant, poisonous. It is also one of the biggest reasons for psychotic oriented emergency room visits. When someone visits the hospital after getting sick on marijuana, the patient thinks they are "high", while the those who work in the hospital see someone who is poisoned. |

Laws take one of two things to change. Either a great amount of people must actively campaign and try to get them overturned (as in the case of prohibition). Or, alternatively, they can wait for decades to pass while slowly whittling away at the law through prolonged campaigns. Marijuana does not have a massive public backing large enough to do the former, so expect it to take many years or a great change in public opinion. |

It was legal many years ago, your question should be "anymore" instead of "yet". |

the government makes way too much out of busting people for holding it.
I don't smoke it and haven't since the 70's.
But I think if they tax the crap outta it like they do cigs and alcohol, it should be legalized. |

It's too hard to tax. There's more in it for the government if they keep it illegal. That's all there is to it. |

Too many people are making big money because it's illegal. |

They should make alcohol illegal, it does far more damage. |

And how invaluable are the thoughts of a pot head who's brain is fried on dope! Let's allow only potheads and crack heads make our laws and lead society. |

in some cases marijuana can cause mental illness is one reason. another is it is considered a gateway drug which means you start with weed and you began exploring other illegal drugs. It is worse for the body than tobacco |

Anyone who tells your that is because it is bad for your is wrong because Cigarettes & Alcohol is much worst & they are legal.
If they tell you because stoners are much more likely to commit crimes or that it is a gateway drug they are also wrong
because if it was legal people would not be associating with criminals & gangs who sale it & try to push harder drugs onto there consumers. nor would it cost so much it would be like buying a pack of cigarettes.
The only reason I can think of is Because it stays in your system for a month. |

I personally can't stand working with people when they are stoned. They are the ones who leave a mess for everyone(not EVERY time) else to clean up(cuz they forgot), more likely to burn food(restaurant) or leave food out all night(food cost), whine about going home every night(same as alcohol), more likely to "disappear" while I/we are working trying to clean up at night, less likely to take things seriously overall----or more likely to say "F" it and just not do it. People have their own work to do at the workplace, not pick up the slack from a "stoner". Now, when they are NOT stoned, they are cranky little whiners(not everyone) that just want to leave work so they can go smoke it.
Overall, just like tobacco and alcohol---- all three of them are bad. Just cuz some people with medical problems get some relief, doesn't mean legalize it for the everyone. I think the punishment(legally) is a little steep, unless it involves an accident or something at that nature.
Just cuz it's legal doesn't erase every law about it. I think it there would be laws very similar to alcohol. It doesn't mean you can smoke and drive, or smoke in public--- just like alcohol in most places. Minors probably won't be able to smoke it. THERE MAY BE MORE ARRESTS AND LEGAL PROBLEMS AFTER IT'S LEGALIZED!!
I personally have quit alcohol and pot for a few years now. I'm working on quiting tobacco. I don't think any of them are good for you, obviously. Who cares which ones are "better" for you, neither of them are GOOD for you, ESPECIALLY when habitually abused.
It probably would help the economy though.
Take care.
EDIT: go ahead and give me a thumbs down... HATER!! |

A variety of lobbies and the fact medical studies show weed is not harmless as once thought. I would still vote to legalize it. It's no worse than alcohol.
Odd as this may sound, the cotton growers do not want any form of hemp legalized. The hemp used for clothing is not marijuana but a cousin to the plant that makes you high. The cotton growers don't want to be wiped out of business by a plant that produces a more comfortable, durable fabric.
Another reason is no politician ever lost an election by being "tough on drugs". The group NORML has been around for more than 30 years and briefly succeeded in decriminalizing marijuana but the 80s saw a resurgence of tougher drug laws. There is no effective lobby to convince enough people at the voting level to change the laws. |

“Marijuana in its natural form is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man.” Its use has rarely been a public safety issue. One cannot overdose on it. Moreover, its legalization would be a tremendous boost to improve public safety. Why? Road officers spend million of hours searching cars for a baggie of pot. They could concentrate on the deadly DUI and reckless drivers. They would be re-directed to find and arrest the child predators on line looking for a 13 year old girl. Federal agents could completely focus on Al Qaeda and stop wasting time on medical marijuana gardens in California.”
Taxing pot like whiskey would generate some $6.4 billion: not chump change! Better, governments waste $10 billion chasing Willie Nelson and his friends and putting them in jail. Federal studies show tobacco as the first illegal drug teens use. Alcohol comes second with marijuana third! The Institute of Medicine in 1999 conducted that study. Less than two percent of marijuana users move on to an abusive relationship with hard drugs.
“Envision a country which employs the principles of personal responsibility, personal freedom and limited/effective government toward marijuana,” I see a growing respect for the police, as they stop intruding into the decisions of adults, made in the privacy of their castles. Teens find it as hard to buy pot as beer. Fewer teens use it because it lost its glamour. Imagine a land where the deadly DUI and reckless drivers kill far fewer, as officers’ focus on them, not the next pot bust. Envision detectives arresting more child predators as they abandon the time spent arresting someone selling pot to an adult. All this becomes possible, when America becomes wiser and abandons the prohibition approach to marijuana.” |

You must be high now to think that...
This is a democracy. It's illegal because most voters want it to be. Change the minds of 60 % of the people, and you'll get legal dope. |

I agree, as long as ANY kind of smoking is restricted to where your smoke isn't bothering other people - regardless of whether it's marijuana or tobacco. It's about time that marijuana users aren't looked at like they're demons, but at the same time tobacco users need to curb their own drug habit and not impose it on others around them. |
