Hi my name is Marissa and I am 14yrs old i just want whats best for my sister and nephew. My sister is currently in a shelter and is 9 months pregnant her baby will be here april 27th, she was going to leave the shelter today and move in with my grandpa so her baby could have a home instead of growing up in a crappy shelter where the workers are worse then the people living there but one of the workers who always sleeps during her shift told my sister if she leaves the shelter she was going to call cps and have my nephew taken away can they do that if she just wants to leave and give her son a better life?

I'm really worried cause my family has been involved with cps since i was 7 and all the cops around here know us and how it is at my home so im afriad they will belive the worker over my sister and i dont know how to calm down my sister and have her not worry about it so much and just leave

They can't take him away without good reason to do so. If your sister has a safe, stable home with your grandpa, then there should be no reason for social services to take away your nephew. It sounds like that worker is making idle threats toward your sister. What kind of shelter is this? Is your sister legally bound to stay there for some reason? I don't know why the cops would even answer a call to stop a pregnant woman from moving out of a homeless shelter into a home. That seems absolutely ridiculous. |

Think about it...what's worse? Giving birth to a baby while you're technically homeless...or move in with an immediate relative so the baby has a stable family home when he gets here? The worker is making a ridiculous threat. CPS would much rather see the baby go to great-grampa's house than to start his new life in a shelter. |

She can threaten to. Whether she will or achieve the outcome she say will happen is a different story. She'd have to have grandpa's address to tell them where to find her anyway. Either way, it's not illegal to live with a family member while raising a child. If the home is safe and stable, CPS isn't going to take her baby. |

Your sister can leave anytime she wants to. No random worker at a shelter can tell you what to do. If she wants to leave, she can. There's nothing that says it's against the rules to go live in a shelter for a while and then you can never leave, because then shelters would be ENORMOUS by now. So...yeah. |
