Can the cops really search your car if they pull you over?

If the police wish to search your vehicle, they will ASK your permission first, perhaps wording the request in such a way to scare you into submitting to the search. It's the easiest way for them to legally search your vehicle. Other than that, they need a proper warrant, signed by a judge to legally search your vehicle without your permission.

No they can search your car with probable cause. They will ask you if you agree to a search. Please make sure you say no. This will be important in trial later

not unless they have reason to believe you have drugs or a weapon on you they need a warrant,they need to have a warrant to search your glove compartment or boot if locked

If the cops pull you over and have a "reason" to search your car then they can. Now, they do not have to have a good reason, just any reason. Our laws are based on on "morals". Define that word? You can not, everyones morals are different.

My sister and I went through this Exact thing back In the 80s,We had a Friend with us and My sister was taking me Home..Our friend had a Small Pocket Knife In his back Pocket at the time.Well,Out of Nowhere there was a cop,He pulled us Over (So called for going to slow,Supicious) Anyways,He saw Our friend in the back ,Moving something and He asked us all to step Out ;So he could Search..He never asked,Just did it..Naturally,found Nothing But the Lil Pocket Knife,BUT If I were U ;I would call and Or Look Up the Legals On your rights If u are Stopped Like that..:)

I agree with Karen, I think they will be needing a search warrant, but as I have oberved, all the cops can do is "search" the car by looking through your car e.g. flash light without actually holding anything from your car. But sometimes, when the situation calls it, i think the police have the right to search it, just like doing a "warrantless arrest" when there is what we call the "clear and present danger".

Yes, they can, and no, they don't need a warrant. Moving vehicles fal under the Carrol Doctrine. THis includes mobile homes unles they're hoked up to their electircity etc and imobile, in which case, they are treated like houses.

In the U.S They can if they say it was "Probable Cause". In other words, even if they don't have a warrant and you "look" suspicious or if your car has cigarrette ash and it "looks" like Cocaine or Mariguana to them - They will Search you. Cops can make up any excuse and call it "Probable cause" just to search you.

I know. Its stupid and should be unconstitutional like in Mexico! Cops in Mexico cannot search you unless you let them. :)

They need a warrant for your house, but in your car if they suspect you got drugs or something illegal they can do whatever they think is right. Which is probably searching it.

yes because unlike your home your car is moving around and if they see you are doing anything dangerous they can pull you over and yes this also counts with mobile homes
