That would be impossible to work, with taxes and such. Each person gets their own number, there are millions of combinations.

NO that would be pretty stupid. However in the past 500 people were accidentally given a fake social security number when they bought wallets which led to confusion. |

If you are asking if they can intentually be given the same number the answer is no. That is not to say that do to some sort of glitch in the system two people may have been issued the same number. I never heard of it, but I suppose it is possible. |

NO it would be by mistake !! if this happened to you contact, your social security office!! it could mean that you are being defrauded!! and that can cause you serious problems !!! |

Not assigned however if an illegal, randomly put numbers together for a job application and it is yours. Guess who has those funds credited to his account - YOU.
If for some reason you ever get audited, and records show those increases(that you do not know about) and the figures are not on your income tax filing. Yup, hurt, pain and physical agony.
It amounts to identity theft, but is unknown, people need to wake up, the illegal immigrant issue can cause more problems than just superficial ones. |

Yes, it happened to me. I applied for my driver's permit and I was refused it because I had the same ssn as a 90 year old woman. That was the first time I had officially used my number, so it had never been caught before then. I had to go to the ss office to straighten out the confusion. I was given a used number when I was born. They changed hers. It didn't make sense to me, but YES, it can and DID happen! |

Yes it can happen. I have twin daughters and their names are only a letter different. They were both assigned the same number. Now, 9 months later, it still isn't resolved. I am unable to do my taxes or add her to our insurance. Its a huge mess. |
