Lets say you meet a girl on a dating site, and she says shes 18 or 20 years old. Lets say if the girl is really only 16 or 17, can you be arrested and prosecuted just for meeting her. Can dateline have a decoy and say she is 23, but really only be 16 years old, then bust you. If I did meet a girl online, I would first ask her for her ID when we first met, just to make sure she was of legal age.

They bust those that are told at some point that she is really younger than she once stated. If they never tell you they are younger, you can't be arrested. Best thing to do is just do not talk to someone that you think has the slightest possibility to be underage. |

dating service should know, and I think
if you pushed it, they could be held
partially responsible. I would meet in public
and yes ask for 2 IDs
But I would stay away from someone who
doesnt seem legit,, why risk getting in trouble
with someone who you detect dishonesty in

Im not really sure , but a safe bet if your going to meet someone is to meet them in a very public place while you check there id , not their house . Try like a mall or upscale resteraunt . That way there will be no confusion by the authorities . |

If she says she is over the legal age, 18, and then when you really meet her and she says she is under 18, then you should walk away then. The real question is, did you find out if she was under 18 online or when you met her? If online, your screwed, if in person, just walk away.... |

The answer is a big "No". Meeting someone after having chatted online with a girl, who tells you a false age of hers, is not a crime .But , indulging in prohibited actions after knowing the truth that she is below 18 is punishable under law.

not if you can proove that she lied about her age. The sting operations on dateline are adults saying they are underage kids and catchin guys TRYING to meet underage kids. They are not after guys that think they are meeting someone of legal age.
I would not AVOID meeting anyone from online - just be carefull and if you have any reason to suspect they may be underage. I would take a copy of the e-mail or profile were they stated their age so you are covered. |

If you meet, 1)meet in a public place, 2)tell her to bring a friend. 3)And you make sure you bring a friend as well (a female friend).
Yes, ask for her ID- you're smart you can do it in a tactful way. "I can't believe you're only 20, you look great! I don't believe it, why don't you prove it? (shows ID)Oh you are 20, well I guess it's only fair that if you show me yours I gotta show you mine!" Insert coy smile and a wink.
Then pull it out.....your ID fool!
If she's not 18, then you haven't committed a crime. You've asked all the pertinent questions, thank her for her time. Tell her that she's charming but you can get in big trouble for being with someone underage (doesn't she watch dateline?) and then get the hell out of there with your female friend that you brought. |

That is a really smart thing to do now a days!!! If a girl says she is over the age of 18, I would think that you would not get in to trouble! But if at any time she discloses how old she is, and you persue her still, you can be prosecuted! And I know they can get into all kinds of things on someones computer!! |

These are good questions. Could you be arrested.....definitely. You can be arrested for just about anything. That being said if you had transcripts of your conversations proving that the girl claimed to be of age, and you took reasonable steps to ensure that this was not a minor I can not see you be prosecuted. |
