yes, and if you know the full name of the inmate you can check the internet. Search for that county's jail and there should be a link to check who is in jail and for what. Not in all county's.

A lot of states allow you to check the status of prisoners on-line. The federal system will tell you what facility they are in, their prisoner number, etc. Depends on the State, but check out their Department of Corrections website.
