I was threatened at work, I told HR and next day I was demoted. It's enough of a pay cut to where I'm unable to pay my bills like I did before the demotion. Can I get unemployment to make up for this pay cut? This was a wrongful demotion and I can't afford the loss, I have 3 children and a house payment.

No. Unemployment is only if you get laid off. you still have a job and even though the money is not enough to support you and your children, it still doesn't count. |

they demoted you.. thinking you mught quit.. and no you are employed you can not collect unemployment .. however you might be able for assitance such as food stamps
also i would talk to an union rep if possible,. if not your local labor board about this.. |

In many states, if an employer cuts the hours and pay of employees they may be able to collect partial unemployment. I think in Massachusetts the employer has to apply to participate in this program.
What were you threatened with? It is illegal for an employer to fire people for reporting certain kinds of misconduct. Depending on who threatened you and why, you might have a discrimination case. Try talking to the Unemployment Office, the EEOC, or (better yet) an attorney. |
