Cashiering Mistake.?
|
I was a cashier all my life and only made one mistake of giving over $5 back and the customer was cool about it. Never was short or over.
NOW, I was at Costco the other day and an older man gave a clerk a $100 bill for a $36 total purchase. Clerk gave him back only $4 !!!. It was so shocking and obvious. He noticed it and asked for his $60 back which she gave him.
Mistake or no, but this was blatantly outrageous, and obvious.
Good thing he paid attention.
My Q is if a register is over $100s of dollars or more does the company keep it if no one comes forward?

I'd say the company keeps it, if the cashier doesn't find a way of taking it out of the register before anyone noticed anyway. It's a way of covering if another person's register turns out to be short.
It happens the other way around too - con artist "clients" who tell the cashier that "no, I gave you a fifty" when they paid only a twenty, and since the cashier can't always prove the customer's wrong and customer is still king, the register can show to be short on money.
This happened to me once, with a colleague standing right next to me and not saying a word until the "client" had left, then he ran to the manager to tell him how "stupid" I was. Luckily, that time the manager actually got angry with my colleague for not stepping in (I hadn't been working there for long) and told me not to worry about it, he sorted it. Really messed me up though that night - the colleague made me feel it was all my fault and that I was stupid, I got so upset that the manager let me off early. |

Im sure they do because since we're talking cash- theres no way for them to really know who gave it to them by mistake and where that 100 extra came from. Thats if the cashier didnt notice first and pocket that extra themselves..... |

my guess is no one will know the drawer is over because that extra money goes into the cashier's pocket...its not like when the drawer is short because that will be noticed when the drawer is counted. |

The company is suppose to correct the mistake if the customer comes back. They cannot correct the mistake until the end of the night or the cashier's shift is over depending on the type of store. Usally what happens is the manger will count down the cahiers drawer with the cashier present at the end of the shift and the overage should show that's if the cashier did not knowingly pocket the overage (as would have been in this case). The company will return the money to the customer if claimed. If not it goes in the till and is recorded as an overage. |

They probably do but that cashier would have been fired as well. |

Yes they do! The company keeps it, but it goes as a negative mark against the employee who was running the register when it happened. |

When I was a chashier and people would be over in their drawers, it would be noted, just as if you were under. The money that was over was kept, because at the end of the day it was used to balance someone else out who was short. |

The company will keep it and probably convert into petty Cash fund, or Employee incentive fund. The company will find a way to utilize the extra money. |

I used to work at a greeting card store that bussed seniors in on wednesdays. There would be some many people a lot of time my the drawers would be over. My company would keep it and write chashiers up for it. its a lot of paper work to have to go through. I have also had friends who work as clerks and do it intentianly |

Sure. Chances are the registers are short more often than over, so that just goes to balance it out. |

Yeah, I think the company will keep it. |

Generally it's just figured to be an accounting mistake. The cashier would not be fired unless repeatedly getting the numbers wrong. |

That depends on whether you are honest or not. You obviously can't give it back to a customer that you don't know who they might have been. If you report it with the till, then the company keeps it. If you see it's over, and pocket it only God, you, and the camera know.
I would let the company have it, because I would sleep better at night. If you take it, then you run into the chance of having another drawer short that day (little or no chance if you have only two or one registers). |

For a time it would be posted into a "Suspense Account", or as "Overage and Shortage".. The money would be deposited in the bank. After a time, if no claim is made, the money will go into sales or just used to offset shortages.. |
