Civil fine from Walmart?

I just got a call from Walmart. I got caught stealing a $20 knife from there a couple weeks ago. They say I need to pay a $150 fine by a certain date or it'll raise $75 more. Anyone have any clue what to do in this situation?
Additional Details
When I was caught I was walking out the door and two men grabbed me and brought me to the security room. In there they scanned my drivers lisence, took down my phone number, and made me sign a paper saying I was not to set foot in Walmart again or I'd be arrested. Then they let me go. The knife was still in it's original conditon, not taken out of package or anything, and could have (and probally was) just placed right back on shelf.

Have them produce the LEGAL paperwork stating you owe this fine... IF it goes to court (big if at this point and I HOPE you're still a minor) get a public defender... have them provide the security tape and the knife you stole (which will of course have your fingerprints all over the packaging)... if they can't provide all this, you can always claim you signed the paper they waved under mental duress! Were you read your rights my the Wallyworld cops??? Where you given the opportunity to phone your legal counsel???
Even more than petty thief's, I DETEST Walmart and their gestapo tactics! When the dvd I bought and paid for set off their little security alarms (not once, but on two separate occasions) I was treated like a criminal until I was willing to show them my receipt... Scr*w Walmart! |

Is this a court judgement? I mean, when you got caught, what DID you agree to? What DID you sign? Did they call the police?
What is the legal 'basis' for this Wal Mart fine? I wasn't aware that Wal Mart was in the business of 'fining' customers (non-paying or otherwise).
What next? Wal Mart cops out on the streets fining us for not shopping at Wal Mart? Egads..... |

Wal-mart has absolutely no police authority in any municipality in any state or possession within these United States. However upset they may be with you, they cannot impose fines and to attempt to do so puts them in violation of the law. They stand to lose a hell of a lot more than they're demanding from you if this matter went before a magistrate - and they know it. Someone is trying to blackmail you and may not even be an official representative of Wal-mart. Ignore such calls and talk to your lawyer.
BTW - what's the matter with you that you stole something? You nuts or what? You know better - pay ONLY what a court says you have to pay, and don't do something that stupid any more! |

Pay the fine, they have every right to file shop lifting charges, instead they are just charging you a minimal fine. I would pay and not risk a criminal charge. |

pay the fine or you will have it on your record and prob have to take an ethics class which is 8 hours and about $80 plus court fines. |

Stop stealing things. It sounds like you admitted to committing the crime.
If you prefer to spend 20 times more to fight the accusation in court, go ahead. It sounds like a fair deal to me. I'd take them up on it.
Do not invest, work, or purchase items from this retailer. The company migrates a lot of cash from communities. Don't steal from them either. |
