Council housing?
Find answers to your legal question.

Council housing?

I am a single, 26 year old on a low income, I have no dependents, I am born in the Uk and have no disabilities, am I entitled to Council Housing? If not is there any other way I can get housing?

Unless you are legitimately homeless, then the Council has a duty to advise you, but not necessarily to find you housing. It is not an entitlement to have council housing. If you have made yourself homeless they willnot help you. But, there is always a waiting list for council homes and it is awarded on a points system. As you are single with no dependents, you would probably be way down on the list. Why don't you contact your council so that you can fill in the the multi page application form and also contact some of your local housing associations. Their criteria for helping might differ from the council.

You are ideally. But unless you are an immigrant with 4 or more kids then no, sorry.
I was told this by an insider within OLDHAM council.
Even white people can't get housing in our town, its disgusting how our own people are being treated.

if you have somewhere to live now and in the near future you wont be high priority and will have to wait...councils have all sorts of different and absurd rules which are often unfair im afraid..when i was younger we had to stay at a relatives cramped house for 2years because there was a rule that you had to have lived in the area for 5 out of the last 7years or for the past 2years(even though my mother had been born and lived there nearly all her life)...apply for a council house and they will take into account all your details and put you on a waiting list(do this asap)..although dont expect more than a 1bed flat (unless youre lucky)

oh, and i'd also advise you exagerate with the truth to get the best chance properly.ive known imigrants etc to lie about all sorts and end up in the best council houses available so it may seem wrong but if you dont then someone else will.say you are being evicted or can no longer manage with rent payments etc

You can certainly put your name on the list,
but dont hold your breath, and if you are not of ethnic origin forget it, go to heathrow airport carry the bags of the first single African male or female make friends and marry them ,
4 years down the line you will have 4 children one on the way a mother in law several cousins a cat and you will get your flat at Mandela house Del and Rodney ave moved,
God knows what else you may have got but your a council tenant now, bon chas mon amigo.

Anyone is entitled to council housing. the only problem is that young single men with no dependants score very low on housing lists.
You could say that you are being abused at the place you are staying at the moment (can worth up to 35 extra housing points) or you could say you are about to be evicted (you will need an eviction notice from your current landlord)
Good luck.

You are entitled to Council Housing, but there is always a waiting list. If you are not considered as vulnerable, you may have to wait a number of years... depending on the demand in your area. You could also try a Housing Association.

If like most of us you go the honest route to get Council Housing you will be put on the list which we are all entitled to do at anytime you can get the forms from your local housing department. You will be given various points eg my council gives you 1 point for every month you are on the waiting list !! I have the princely sum of 29 points with approximately 89 awaiting in the background which only activate when I really need the housing !! I was told I would have to make myself homeless and there is non way I would do that on purpose. I am a divorcee with a teenage son only just managing in a private rented property. I have been told I don't stand a chance of getting a place because other people come in front of me, at last count these were immigrants and asylum seekers we have a lot in our city.
There are housing associations but to get to them you have to be on the Council house waiting list and the council has to refer you, or they do in my area anyway.

Now I said honest route and I don't condone lying etc but let me just say that a young friend of my sons has just been accomadated by the council because his parents who have a very large house and swimming pool said he was homeless !! Also if you have a medical condition your docter may be able to help get housing.

To be honest I used to get angry at seeing people get up to these sort of tricks but these days I can understand why they may do it. If like me you have worked hard and paid your taxes over the years you do wonder what its all been for.

Good luck.

Every one is entitled to a council house, but some are more entitled than others. Every man and his dog knows that. What we want is solutions. There are thousands of council houses unoccupied, one person living in a three bed roomed house. As likely as not they have been a tenant for many years, their family have grown up and left. Possible they are a pensioner living on their own. Lets build more accommodation for single person households, this will free up family accommodation. There are many families with an income that would allow them to pay a mortgage, don´t have enough fr deposit to buy a house. I say give a deposit let them buy a house, this will leave a house for those who are in need. The only people who should get social housing are those who cannot get it together to buy their own house.

Take heart - I started the same way about 5 years ago and now own my own home. We bought ours and thats how we got the money as a deposit to buy. It actually worked out cheaper to buy than to rent the council property.
Good luck and I hope you get something.

LadyMoonlight!!
You have no chance of getting Council Housing.

While anyone is by law entitled to register for Council Housing, a serious shortage of it means that the waiting lists are around 10 years long and as "priority cases" will jump the queue - ie people who are unintentionally homeless and priority need whom the Council therefore have a duty to house (including people with children, pregnant women etc) and, surprise surprise, successful asylum seekers.

We have an 8 month old baby and nearly lost our house to mortgage repossession recently as we are on a very very low wage and my partner was out of work for a while. We were told that we'd never get Council Housing as

a) the Council see repossession as "intentional" (ie you could have prevented it by taking out mortgage insurance or negotiating with your lender.

and

b) as there are not enough Council Houses and too many people needing them, all the Council do these days is to put a homeless family like us in a Bed & Breakfast or Hostel for 6 weeks (any longer is against the law) and give them "advice" to help them find a private rented place (where you can be ripped off by shark landlord who won't take housing benefit and wants £600+ per month for the priviledge of living in his scabby house from which he can ask you to move out at any time so he can move his rellies in - been there done that.).

By all means put your name down on a Council list but if they would tell us that a young family with a baby like us had virtually no chance of ever getting housed then a single person with no dependents has even less chance.

As I've said, the waiting lists can up 10 years long in some areas and "unintentionally homeless priority cases" always jump the queue meaning that non-priority and "intentionally homeless" (ie the Council has no duty to house) will probably never get housed.

By the way, Housing Associations are exactly the same - 10 year waiting lists and only "priority" cases referred from the Council will have any chance of being housed. I've been told by an insider who works for United Welsh Housing that if you're not an asylum seeker you have no chance.

its just taken me and my family 18 months to get a move. we are a family of 5 living in a tiny 2 bedroom flat. we have overcrowding points and medical points. my brother got kicked out of his house for his partners bit on the side to move in and he got told it was pointless to put his name on the list as he was a single male. the rules are terrible, people from this country should be given priority

You are indeed entitled to housing. Many councils sold their housing stock to what are known as Arms Length Management Agencies, but councils still have housing responsibilities. You should contact the housing department of your local council. You could also try one of your local housing associations (HA), if you viist the link below they should be able to assist you on finding your local HA as well as give you some advice about finding housing.

Good luck.

As previously said...you can apply to be placed on the housing list....but you will not be a priority and could wait for years, if ever, to get a house.

If you made a homeless application, your LA should provide you with temp housing while they investigate your reasons for being homeless. eg you have no where to live but is that of your own doing like not paying rent. This could eventually lead to council housing if it goes in your favour

Another option would be to write to all the housing associations and ask them if they would consider you as a tenant./purchaser You would normally be advised to go through the council for this....but you can try....and i confirm it works.

In with a housing association you may then have the option to rent to buy. Depends on the area you live in. ASK and you will find.

As you are on a low income you may be entitled to other benefits like housing benefit etc if you are renting now....or any of the above options become available

jackie m
Like the rest of us they will put your name on a waiting list and you will wait about 10-15 years for a flat - unless you sub let but that is expensive

Catwhiskers
you are entitled to go on the waiting list for a council house. How long you will be waiting....no one can tell. I know people with families who have had to spend years in homeless accommodation before finally getting a council house, a single person like yourself is not a priority so you will be continually pushed to the back of the queue.

candyfloss
You are entitled to housing and could be offered a small one bed flat and there are housing associations everywhere once you fill in an application form with the council there's usually a section asking if you would consider housing association housing.
