Courts, Swearing-in & Religion?

Can a court hold a person in contempt of court if they are an Athiest or Agnostic and refuse to perform the ritual hand on a bible oath?

Obviously they do not have any affiliation or even acknowledge a religious doctrine that they would fall under to have that influence them to follow a certain practice...

Wouldn't that fall under the seperation of church & state? Besides, when a person has given a statement/confession to law enforcement they do not go through that same ritual of the hand on a bible...

Wouldn't that be going against someones individual civil liberty to be forced to participate in a religious ceremony like putting your hand on a religious bible?

Besides, do you really think that anyone who puts themselves in a situation to be in court would recognize and conform to the adherence of a religious theology?

People in court who do not want to swear in on the Bible can affirm without any book. This has been the case for a very long time. As a matter of fact, many courts have already done away with using Bibles or any book and simply have jurors and witnesses swear or affirm.

Love Canada.
NO problem, you do not have to swear on the Bible, that was the old days

In the USA, they are not supposed to. You are supposed to be able to affirm your promise to tell the truth; no Bible or "So help you God" required.
As far as your last question: yes, some do. They may have witnessed the crime, and God certainly punishes for bearing false witness. A deeply religious person may very well be in court and fear more for their soul than their person.
