The best guess I can come up with is since he's older than I (and probably you) are, perhaps he got used to hiding it when he was younger and has never been comfortable revealing it. The UK is pretty gay friendly now but it wasn't always the case, especially for someone who wanted a career in politics.

Still, if he wanted to be so secret about it he could have rented his own separate apartment from the beginning. Bad planning really.

I think you're missing what the scandal actually is. Well, the conflict that he should resign for anyway. The rags will focus on whatever they want.

This wouldn't be any different if it'd been a girlfriend instead of a boyfriend.
