Death penalty? Are you for or against?
|
Give one reason. Additional Details Yes, the judicial system is not perfect and worldwide, it is sometimes used as a political tool to remove opposition. When an innocent person is held accountable and executed by the state, is it still right to have it as law.

Two wrongs do not make a right. And there is no safe way of proving 100% that a person has committed a serious crime such as murder. also it is double standards if the state says you can't kill but we can it sends out the wrong message; if murder is wrong and no one is allowed to do it why does the state give itself the power? this is probably why it doesn't act as a deterent.
I am completely opposed to it. |

For. Someone who has killed do not deserve to live. Especially terrorist leaders, serial killers, child abusers / murderers etc. The government shouldn't be taking care of them in the prisons. Jails are for the ones that might heal and deserve a second change. |

For- apart from a penalty equal to the crime, as in death for one who committed murder, the death penalty is a good deterrent for others who might commit murder. As far as people convicted and sentenced with the death penalty being innocent, the majority of death row inmates are actually guilty. DNA testing and the laws have been updated as the technology has so in most cases if DNA is an issue, a sample has already been taken, and ruled out. |

I'm all for it, if they definitely commit the crime, because they shouldn't live if they did something really bad. |

Against, for many reasons:
- Mistakes happen. In the last 35 years in the U.S., 130 people have been released from death row because they were exonerated by DNA evidence (DNA is not available in most homicide cases).
- It costs taxpayers MUCH more to execute someone than to imprison them for life.
- It is not a deterrent - violent crime rates are HIGHER in death penalty jurisdictions.
- It is inconsistently and arbitrarily applied.
- Jesus was against it (see Matthew 5:7 & 5:38-39, James 4:12, Romans 12:17-21, and John 8:7).
- Life without parole (LWOP) is on the books in most states now, and it means what it says. People who get this sentence are taken off the streets. For good. |

You know what, I don't really know.
I get that it discourages people from committing crimes, but only some people. Many serious crimes are committed by people who have mental problems, and the death penalty is no where near as likely to discourage these people who feel compelled to carry out the crime, of believe they are justified in doing it etc. If it really worked, there would be no murders in the places that the death penalty is in use - but this is just not true.
Also, there are still cases of the wrong person being executed. It is a very expensive process, and in the USA they have people waiting on death row for years and year, which wastes even more money, before they get the punishment.
And, well, I just don't think we should be deciding who dies and who does not. I've never understood how religious people can agree with it, what with the whole "thou shalt not kill" thing. But yeah, I don't know whether I agree with it or not. I can see there are benefits, and it's certainly better than keeping murderers in prison for only 10 years or so, when prisons are so easy and it's such a short sentence.
Either way, whether we re-introduce capital punishment in my country or not (and over half the population are in support of it) we need to tighten up the justice system, giving people longer sentences, and making prisons more, well, punishing. |

This sounds super islamist and you might think i'm some radical muslim terriost. I'm the furthestthing from that. US prison systems are overloaded and costing taxpayers millions of dollars. I think there should be an option of Lashings. They are cheap, teach small criminals a lesson, save taxpayers dollars. We could free up all those prison cells for hard-core criminals. Also in response to your question. I'm sort of against Death Penalty. What if they convicted the wrong man. You just MURDERED an innocent law abiding citizen and let a murderer free to live his/her sad and stupid life. |

As a U.K. citizen with a namby-pamby laws life for any type of crime usually means 11 yrs and after 50% of time served they can apply for parole and if they've been good government type boys their entitled to walk out. Now then DEATH penalty definitely FOR especially in the case of MURDER and R-A-P-E .BUT the second case it's got to be without a doubt. |

In a word AGAINST.
If you want it as a deterrent it doesn't work, Albert Pierrepoint the public hangman who sent over 600 souls to the hereafter, after retiring was one of the strongest voices for it's abolition saying that in all his years of experience he never thought it was a deterrent.
As a form of retribution I think it's morally wrong and unjustified.
Since it's abolition there have been several free votes on it's reintroduction, not only have they been overwhelmingly defeated, but the margin of the defeat has increased with each vote, so for all those who just want revenge are think it's a deterrent, forget it it's just not going to happen.
And lastly, as there have been so many cases of miscarriages of justice in the past despite all the latest DNA advances it's just not going to happen. |

much as it would be upsetting to see an innocent person executed, the simple fact is, that murderers and paedophiles etcetera, have nothing to fear. if they get caught, all they have to worry about it a cosy cell, three square meals a day and all their thinking done for them whilst they go to the gym, take classes or lounge around reading a book.
if the fear of dangling from a rope waiting for their neck to snap was on their minds, they might feel a little less inclined to do the things they do.
its a deterrent, just like nuclear weapons, nobody likes them but it is a necessary evil.
in all wars, innocent people may die, the governments call it collateral damage and yet still the war continues.
is the war on crime any different? |

Honestly i'm for it, there are criminals that need executed the obvious ones are peados and rapists, but into the mix i would love to add burglars and car thieves and shop robbers who will use violence to rob people just trying to do a job. Burglars car thieves and robbers who use violence or the threat of it, you can be sure they're the ones that did it and deserve strung up. when it comes to peado's and rapists stringing them up should be as a last result after all other avenues of investigation have been exhausted. I would hate for the wrong person to be executed even if they already had a record or admitted it. execute the wrong person that means the one who did is still free. |
