Did you choose to be an organ donor when you recieved your license, why or why not?
Find answers to your legal question.

Did you choose to be an organ donor when you recieved your license, why or why not?

Also, what are the pros and cons of it?

I chose yes, but only based on my want to help others.

In England we don't have donor cards on our license but we can carry a separate one on our persons.

I'm sitting on the fence on this one. I have heard too many horror stories, in real life and on telly when somebody is on death door and the medical professions haven't fought to save the life as they know that a donor is waiting for a body part (Grey's Anatomy springs to mind when a lady had a brain tumour and because somebody was waiting for an organ from her, the professions didn't try to save her, until that is McDreamy heard about it and he was able to save her).

My husband is on the understanding that if they seriously have tried everything and I would be better off dead than alive, then he can donate everything and the rest to go to science.

Pro a life or lives are saved, con a life can be lost when it could have been saved.

I chose to be an organ donor. Just think about it, it won't hurt you, but you can save generations of families. My father died for medical reasons, and my family was lucky to get enough money from the life insurance. Most people aren't that lucky though. You could be saving someones parent. Without that parent maybe the kids would go over the deep end- you never know. Think about all the people in your life, you could even be saving one of them.... maybe a mother, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, best friend, father, it could even save someone's hero:)

I chose to donate my organs because a few months ago, my friend died tragically. He wanted to donate his organs, but because he had so many blood transfusions, he wasn't able to. Now, a group of my friends and I give blood every three months and have decided to donate our organs. He was an inspiration to us all and may he rest in peace.

I chose to be so that even if I were to die, I could still potentially be saving someone else' life... Something weird I heard is that doctors might not try as hard to save you if you are an organ donor, since your organs could maybe be saving two other peoples lives or something...Probably not true but weird to think about...

no it is not on my license, but my family knows my wishes....yes, I am an organ donor....but there is so much more to it, than just marking it on your license..you can still be an organ donor and not have it on your license

No, that is a decision for your family.
Check and see how much money they get for your parts. I would never trust anyone but my family. Don't think that doctors are beyond letting you go to sell off your parts.
What does your family think of them taking away your body just as you die..

i chose yes i am willing to donate any organ of mine to let another live
i think it is the best thing a person can do
their are so many people that need organs and if i am dyeing and they need a donor no problem whats over

I personally chose yes in my mind...

But this is something that bothered my parents. I chose 'U' for 'undecided' so that if it ever came to a situation where I died, my family would have the option of choosing. I DID tell them that I was perfectly happy with donating, however.

Yeah, I won't be using them, If I produce 50 tomatoes off of my plant and I can only eat ten before they go bad, I'm going to give the rest to my neighbors, same with my organs, they will quickly turn to dirt and be eaten by maggots in a casket, or burned to dust in a crematorium.

It's That Guy
I did, and I have an excellent reason (though I would have anyway). My sweetie, the woman who shares my life and makes my life complete, is a kidney transplant patient.

I think everyone should be a donor, in fact I think it should be an 'opt out' system rather than an 'opt in' system.

My mom said she wouldn't sign the card because she was afraid they'd be in a hurry to cut her up, they might disassemble her before she was really dead. But through our experience, I had learned a lot about organ transplantation. They only take the organs after you're brain dead, and nobody has ever come back from brain death.

I am also bothered by 'NDE' stories, Near Death Experiences. You know, the person is in the hospital, their heart stops, and they see a light and go towards it. They see people they knew who are dead, and the people say 'Go back! It's not your time yet!' And then they wake up.

Stories like this bother me because I think they lead people to think that 'death' is not the end, that people can come back from death. But people who have these experiences do not come back from death because they were never -dead- to begin with! Their brains were still producing brainwaves the whole time.

Also, I wonder if people realize just how many people can benefit from their organs. As many as dozens! Corneas, heart, lungs, kidneys (2), liver (actually 2 or more), pancreas, even skin and bone! Cadaveric skin is the perfect dressing for serious burns. And I broke my arm in a car accident several years ago and needed an operation to put in screws and pins, and afterwards the surgeon told me he'd used some freeze-dried human bone to help my broken ulna heal.

Good question- I often felt a bit guilty about that one, now I wouldn't wish my organs upon anyone. Seriously, the hunger for organs by transplant surgeons has always been a bit intimidating. Yes, in that regard I am selfish and have absolutely no excuse. But then I did not engage in risky behavior which those who do should be mandated to contribute to the general well being for, right or wrong. Wouldn't it be delightfully wicked if some rich guy got my liver, I wonder?

evilattorney
Yes. I won't be needing my organs. Anyone who does is more than welcome to them.

Yep...it would be just stupid and selfish not to.

I cannot see any "cons" to it, unless there are religious issues. To be blunt, when you die, all that's left is meat, and if someone else can use it, it should be used.

However, since I once had hepatitis, I am not eligible to be an organ donor. I have elected to allow my body to be used for science.

Of course - unless your religious beliefs preclude you from organ donation - there is no reason not to.

No, I don't want anyone cutting my body parts out. I want to be buried whole.

I think it's great that people do choose to donate. It's just not for me.
