I just want to explain a little more in detail and hopefully get an answer before I file a claim. I am sixteen years old but I work to help support myself and my family financially and I work full time. I have been employed for three months at a cafe where I work. I have consistently worked 35-40 hours and have never missed a day before today and was late only one time because I thought I worked an hour later than I actually did. I have covered other people shifts when they have called out and have generally been a hard working and stable employee. I called out of work today because I felt sick and it was the first time I had done something like this. My manager (and also owner, it's a small business) was not happy. After I called out, he called me back and said that unless I brought a verifiable Doctor's note then I would be fired. I don't have insurance and neither does anybody in my family. I have no way to afford to visit a Doctor either. Is this an unfair policy? Will I qualify?

Unfortunately you will not qualify for a couple of reasons. First you were fired. Unemployment covers only people who lost their job through no fault of their own. Your employer's policy requiring a doctor's note is reasonable. Additionally, having worked for only 3 months would disqualify you, as unemployment insurance goes back in time for the previous 5 quarters (15 months) of work history to the earliest 3 quarters. Im curious as to where you are from. Typically, it is illegal for 16 yr olds to work that many hours in a given week, which would make your employer in violation of state labor laws. As other posters have mentioned, you can be fired for basically anything so my suggestion in order to try and save your job, is to simply 'mention' to your boss that you have worked very hard for him and even more hours than you should because 'state law says 16 yr olds shouldnt work that many hours', and maybe he will get the subtle threat and not fire you for calling in sick. In the event that you did end up reporting him to the state labor board, he would recieve a considerable fine for violating the law.

Unfortunate welcome to labor in the US in 2000.
Employment is at will in every state but MT. Unless you have a union or a contract, your boss can pretty much fire you for anything.
