Do You Think Marijuana Should Be Legalized?
|
I 100% support the legalization of marijuana, both for medicinal and recreational use. I would like to hear why you are for or against marijuana legalization. I have all the responses to the arguments I know I will get:
Marijuana is a dangerous drug leading to others. - Marijuana is actually less harmful than nicotine and alcohol and there is no known fact that proves marijuana is a gateway drug.
You want people to get stoned all the time? That's what will happen! - Well, liquer stores and bars are always open and people can go and get wasted anytime they want. Nobody is protesting bars and liquer stores to be closed during early work hours.
Marijuana is a harmful drug. You can die from it! - Nobody has died EVER from overdosing on marijuana.
What about the kids? They will get it more freely. - Well i don't think so. Being legal takes away its "edge" and it won't be unique anymore. Plus, just like cigarettes, stores can check ID when purchasing marijuana cigs.

NO as i have seen the damage it can and has done to people i have known, It can lead to the stronger drugs like heroine etc and the brain damage it causes can lead to schizophrenic episodes and break downs.
Yes it is safer than say ice ,Ecstasy etc but all drugs have their side effects that will cause permanent damage .
Learn to live and enjoy life with out these drugs and avoid the problems that they cause |

I am very much against legalization. The fed and the states would both add huge taxes to the price and regulate the quality, keeping it low in THC. The tobacco companies are already to take over and would use it to help phase out tobacco, so we would pay for that too. You would likely have to be registered to sell it and there would be all the hoops and licensing a liquor store has to do, in fact it probably would only be sold at liquor stores. Those thinking they could grow their own are wrong. You can only make a small amount of alcohol for your personal use and pot would surely be similar rules. The penalty for cultivation would have to be increased. (this isn't what I WANT, it is what would likely happen)
So we end up with an expensive, low quality product.
I like it just fine as it is and I trust my dealer much more than I do the fed or the tobacco companies. |

I think that it should be for medical purposes. Kids get high off cough medicine. I don't think this is any different...it's all about how the parents raise their children and the values they instill in them...they can get it now...making it legal would help so many sick people.
(Oh, and think about the people who wouldn't die in botched drug-related crimes) |

It's already used for medicinal purposes in some places, so that's not even the argument. I am on the fence about the whole issue. What I hate is 'potheads' who want it legalized and use the medicinal excuse in their defense...if you want to smoke to get high then admit that's why you want it legalized and don't hide behind medical excuses. It CAN be a gateway drug...it was for me and several of my friends...luckily, when I tried something harder I had a horrible experience so I never did anything worse...but I would never have done it if i hadn't first tried pot. I've seen pot have negative affects on people...it would make us all relaxed and silly, but then nobody would want to do anything else. I have watched friends sit in their house for days on end smoking and playing video games...they wouldn't want to go out and do anything! I've had friends cancel plans or stand me up b/c they decided to get high instead.
I don't care if people smoke...some of the most awesome friends I have smoke...but when it affects your life and your motivation, it's gone too far. That's my worry. |

After being a passenger of a stoned driver in a vehicle who was going 8 in a 65 mile an hour zone I would say don't legalize it. After trying to meet my deadline with my stoned employee who turned in the most ridiculous budget proposal I would have to pass on legalizing dope. Watching the neighbor boy grow breasts by the time he was an adult leaves room for question about the legalization as well since science proved 20 years ago that it changes the hormonal balance in some people. The list goes on and on.
The end product tobacco companies produce is proven to cause cancer and should be illegal. Alcohol alters the mind and has been made illegal to use when driving. Pot does cause emphysema because my pot smoking friend has it now so that should remain illegal. If it causes lung damage then it is just as bad as cigarettes.
We can go even further and include all the pharmaceutical drugs out their that have caused other diseases. Oil refineries emitting toxins and food manufacturers who put cancer causing agents in our food. But, let's not since that all involves big money just like tobacco and will never be taken off the market. |

your right, we have bars that people walk away from drunk as a skunk and have an accident and kill people with their negligence. so, if their allowed to walk away drunk and get into a car, why cant we have marijuana legalized?? i dont know, it does not make sense. althought i never smoke, or drinkfor that matter, i understand your point. but im not sure that legalizing another bad thing would be such a good thing, you know?? just because we have one bad thing legalized, does not make me want to have another bad thing legalized. but it is true and it is double standard.now we have alchohol that is misused and causes deaths, violence, broken families. so we legalize marijuana and have another problem to cope?? |

I do not believe that it should be legalized due to the fact that some people may get the wrong impression about the legalizing of such an addictive drug and may therefore use this as licence to abuse it. we already have enough broken homes and families resulting from the irresponsible use or abuse of drugs so i don't believe society should create more problems without fixing the existing ones. |

depends....
I hate dealing with high people. I don't believe that "it makes me think more clearly" or "it opens up my mind" crap. When you smoke pot, you get stupid. I've never met a person who didn't. You may think you're smarter, but you sound like a complete idiot to anyone who's not high. In all honesty, it's THE BIGGEST turn off when I meet a guy and find out he's a stoner.
However, if they pass a law legallizing it, but you have to use it in your own home, and cannot go out in public while you're high, that woud be fine with me. What you do in your own home is your own buisness. For medicinal purposes; sure, legalize it. |

1: Marijuana is a drug with addictive properties.. (I.E. pleasure is addictive)
2: Yes they would, and ever heard of the 18th Amendment, well, people protested and got alcohol banned before... didn't work out so well, led to gangsters, ect...
3: The "Good Feelings," can and have lead to people: jumping out a window cause they imagined they could fly, or ran in front of a bus cause the thought they were "invincible."
You might say,"That wouldn't happen to me!"(and I'm sure those guys would've agreed with you)
4: Hey! Thats sounds great, because NO ONE EVER buys cigarettes for minors! Yep, I'm sure nobody has ever seen a thirteen year old smoking on his street, or the 16 year old with a fake I.D. Nope, we have perfected Society to a FAULT.
All things considered....
My answer is no. |

Definitely, yes. I always wondered why alcohol is legal and marijuana isn't. Thousands of people die or are injured every year from drunk driving. Wives, husbands, girlfriends and children are beat every day, enabled by a drunk batterer. Alcoholism affects nearly 20 million Americans *and* their families and friends.
Marijuana does not affect the brain like alcohol does. It does not make the brain and body dependent on itself, only to lead you to insanity and death like alcohol does. You can die from alcohol withdrawl. Marijuana does not eat your organs like alcohol does. Why is marijuana illegal while alcohol remains legal?
The government spends too much money fighting marijuana. If they only sold it in stores and taxed the hell out of it.....
It always depends on the person when dealing with marijuana. If someone were to continually inject heroin, smoke cigarettes, or crack ,or drink alcohol to excess, they would, almost 99 percent of the time, become addicted because the drug replaced a needed chemical in the body, and the body stopped making it. That is physical addiction. The people who may be "addicted" to marijuana, have addictive personalities, or who are suffereing emotional trauma and are using it to hide. They are addicted to the euphoria that it provides. I wouldn't be surprised if they had other addictions or compulsions, like gambling. They are using marijuana to fill a need that they are too scared to deal with themselves.
The only problem that I see with marijuana is that it does cause people to sort of demotivate. When teenagers are figuring out who they are, they don't want marijuana keeping them from finding their strengths and their real likes. They might spend too much time getting stoned and not enough on themselves. That could lead to the realization that they aren't good at anything later on, but only because they wasted an important time in their lives to figure out why they are on this planet. Now they are thrown out in the real world, without drive, skills, and have to take what they can get. Like I said before, it's all up to the individual person. I smoked throughout high school, and ended up graduating with honors, top ten in my class, and a list of extracurricular activities. I earned a scholarship to college and am still there. |

Treat it like booze. But......
Don't come on like it has no down side .
I puffed for years and years. I know all about it.
It does change you does it not? Isn't that the point of you smoking, to make you different than you would be if you didn't

Why do you need to change? |

Yes. Prohibition of Alcohol caused a ridiculous increase in crime and murder. This subsided when alcohol was legal again. The War (prohibition) on Drugs caused a ridiculous increase in crime and murder. This will subside when they are legal again. |

Only for medicinal purpose would I ever agree. My problem with it is it does alter your mind so therefore you are not you when you are under the influence of it.
My main concern however is that ALCOHOL is by far the worst drug we have out there and it is legal. I think it should b outlawed. My father was hit head on by a drunk driver and he is basically a vegetable now. He doesn't know any of us in his family. |

The regulation and taxation of cannabis will raise vital revenue for local, state, and federal governments while ensuring that it is sold, like alcohol and tobacco, to adults.
Cannabis is a relatively benign, non-addictive, non-toxic herb with a documented history of use that stretches back thousands of years. It has been used successfully as a fiber for clothing, a foodstuff, a fuel, a medicine, a spiritual aid, and simply for relaxation and recreation.
No civilized nation makes war against a plant, especially one as useful as Cannabis. Get informed. Get active. We can change unjust and cruel laws |

Yes I do think pot should be leagilized, and I think that for two main reasons!
1.) If it were legal and sold in like liquor or tobacco stores it would cut back on the number of drug dealers and underage usage.
2) In my experiences pot is less of a addictive drug then alcohol, and does not do the body as much damage! |

I support the legalazation for mirijuana but not any other drug. however, i do think that there should be limits, such as you have to be 18, and not ALL stores should sell it. Maybe just pharmacies over the counter. The only thing that really worries me is that I know that there are people who would do it in front of their children, just like with alcohol and I don't think young children should have access to it b/c even though its not very addictive, young kids will get addicted on the feeling and will stop doing anything except sitting around smoking pot, but thats what they do with cigarettes and alcohol anyway sooo I'd say I am for the legalization. |

I am against it. People make poor choices when they are stoned. I am not saying everyone has screwed up while they were stoned but, way to many people have.Just because you believe people have not died from it, does not mean there are not other health risks. |

YUP!! Like you said it hasnt been proven to kill anyone.......isnt funny that they legalized cigs that have so many debilitating effects on the human body but not marijuana that has been proven to help people? Wanna know why? Cause then the doctors/pharmacies wouldnt make any money!! Capitalism at its best! AND like you said if it was legal it would automatically lose its appeal to children! Kids are interested in things that they're NOT supposed to have access to NOT legal stuff.....and it definitley does not impair your judgement the way alcohol does......plus drug dealers would probably not profit from it any longer either so I believe that would kinda remove some of those guys from the picture......Imagine the agricultural industry! Farmers would actually have a chance to make some money!
Plus marijuana was only outlawed in I believe it was '73 or '74........go figure |

whats it matter i dont smoke pot but
hey if people want it, theyre gona get it regardless of the law so they might as well save the trouble and leaglize it, plus law officials should be more focused on hard drugs cocaine, heroine, meth, ect. |

Proven Facts: Chocolate and coffee is more addicting then marijuana. There are ZERO deaths associated with marijuana use vs alcohol and tobacco. You can not overdose on marijuana. The government test that stated marijuana kills brain cells is false. The test was they put a gas mask on a monkey and pump 200 joints worth of marijuana through it. The lack of oxygen is what killed brain cells. Hold your breath for an extended period of time and you will get the same result. If legalized we could tax it like cigarettes and help the state and federal budgets. Jail would be less filled and the police can concentrate more on the deadly drugs you can overdose on like heroin. |
