Do you believe that Marijuana should be legalized ?

Please don't use the prase "it's the gateway drug" that one is old and incorrect, I live in a state where medical use is legal.

OG ACE
I think so. There will be far less a-holes walking around.

MRS. MARTIAN
yes. i think it is less harmful than alcohol.

Tigger
Yes! Absolutely! There are so many medical benefits to smoking pot for those who suffer from debilitating diseases such as AIDS, MS, Lou Gerhig's Disease, etc.

It should also be regulated like alcohol...DON'T SMOKE AND DRIVE, DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE!

And you should be a certain age to smoke.

I think it should be legal. It's not any worse than drinking, which even though it kills people, is legal. It is NOT a gateway drug. My husband has been a heavy pot smoker for over 30 years, and never had a desire to try other drugs. I'm not saying being a pothead is a good thing, but it's less harmful than being an alcoholic. He's not stoned out of his mind, he's just overly calm and laid back. I'm sure he'd have more ambition if he didn't smoke, and I'm sure it's damaging his lungs. But that shouldn't make it illegal.

There's always people who will act irresponsibly. It's not good to drive while impaired - by anything, including pot. People driving while on cell phones are pretty dangerous, yet we don't use that as a reason to outlaw them.

Legalize marijuana, and tax it just like cigarettes or liquor. Might as well have the government make money on it, instead of spending money trying to keep people from not smoking it.

I believe that the war on drugs should be ended. Its your body. As long as you don't hurt anyone else, I could care less what you put in it.

Even if marijuana were ever made legal, employers could still fire you for using it. Employers do not have to accept it and do not have to tolerate it's use. Morphine is legal for medical use too, but you cant work alot of jobs while using it...

speakeasy
I only support legalization of industrial hemp. I have had a few friends who were pot smokers and... it had some real effects on them.

Damn, maybe you should consult one of the trillion questions that have already been asked about this.

I don't believe in unrestricted drug abuse, no.

However I don't see why a doctor cannot write a prescription for marijuana in the form of a pill for medical reasons. I don't believe in smoking pot in a hospital, but the medical benefits of marijuana for cancer patients and so forth are undeniable.

I just think that the nation has enough pot heads who can't drive, show up to work on time, show emotion or reason, or function properly. I've worked with plenty of potheads and they all exhibit the same quality of having their brain cooked a bit too much. You can't even insult them because they have no idea what you're saying.

I feel sad for them. A mind is a terrible thing to bake.

I also don't see why hemp is illegal. The only thing that happens if you tried to smoke hemp is you'd get a terrible, terrible headache.

aunt_webby
never !

Uncle John
I don't, no. I think it should stay illegal. I ilve in a state, in which medical use is legal in one county, but it's actually illegal in the state, itself. Confusing, but that's the way it is. Anything that can be used legally, even for medical reasons can be addictive, and then used wrongly. Any such legal substances can be stollen, and can ruin a person's brain and/or concentration, ect. There I respect your wish, as to what phrase to not use. But what is a gateway drug?

No, marijuana should not be legalized.

And, it is a "gateway drug." Just because you don't like this argument doesn't stop it from being a valid argument against legalizing marijuana. By ruling this argument out you sound like a child arguing with a parent. You think you can disqualify each valid argument as it comes up and eventually win. Real life doesn't work that way. I'm a parent and have seen this tactic so many times it isn't even funny anymore.

Legalizing marijuana is a gateway drug in two senses. The one you seem to want to rule out which is that eventually those who no longer get a kick out of marijuana - become accustomed to it - will eventually move on to something stronger. This may not be true for everyone but would certainly be true for the many dupes who would try marijuana just because the government seemed to say it was okay.

The second is the foot-in-the-door or camel's-nose-under-the-tent argument. Once, druggies get marijuana legalized everywhere, they will start on the next drug and argue for its legalization and then the next. It's the old slippery-slope thing. It's best just to say no now and keep the drug laws as they are.

So, you see, your ruse of ruling out the most effective argument against marijuana on the pretense that it is old and incorrect is pretty child-like and ineffective.
