Do you feel any sympathy for people in jail or prison over Christmas?

I know from being in prison it's the toughest time to be locked up and especially if you have kids

"Don't do the crime if you can't do the time."

They are in prison for a reason, and I have no sympathy for them. I have a brother that was in jail for a few months over a summer and he missed a few family get-togethers. We missed him at these functions, but we also understood he was paying the consequences for his actions.

*EDIT* - I just want to comment on the "depends on what they did" answers: Just because you may feel a law is unjust and should not be a law does not make breaking that law OK. I don't agree with marijuana laws, nor seat belt laws. But I still obey the law because I don't want to pay the consequences if I don't.

If you don't like a law, there are other ways to express your opinion than breaking the law. Contact your state representative and/or Congressman about it. Hold rallies at the state capitol. Write letters to the local newspapers. And all kinds of other legal ways to express your opinion.

I don't feel sorry for them. Obey the law and you wouldn't be there in the first place! I have been in jail in the past, I don't sit around blaming people or want anyone to feel sorry for me. I was there for what I did, no one put me there, I put myself there...

yes it is horrid to be locked away with a bunch of crazies and being away from loved ones.
sure i feel sorry for those who are locked-up and sitting around doing nothing of value towards themselves or anyone. more self-pity multiplies within prison walls.
now if they are one of the very few luckier prisoners, who are able to work or be trained vocationally, those people feel they have a purpose and have a positive direction to head out to once released.
seems to me that most people become criminals because they don't feel valued as a person.

No, sorry, but I do not have any sympathy for them, even if there are children involved. As far as I am concerned, they put themselves in there and must suffer the consequences from doing so.

No, I do not. As others have stated above, they had the chance we all have to obey all the laws - including not smoking mj. They have made it tough on family and friends. Perhaps if they feel sad and repentant they are reformed which is what jail is about - that and punishing them.

If they deserve to be there then no.

That's where I spent my Christmas. No one cared, or come in early so I could go home. Oh, I work there.

Edit: If the inmates were so concerned about being home for Christmas, they shouldn't have committed the crimes.

Yes, I do. I feel sad for anyone who's unhappy for any reason. We all have plenty of opportunities to do stupid things. Some people get caught and others don't. Not every person in jail is guilty of what they've been convicted, and some are still in the accused state. I feel very sad for the innocent people there awaiting trial. I feel sad for their kids and their spouses and their parents and all their friends.

We could all do with a little more compassion for our fellow man. There but for the grace of God go I (and you too).

Of course not. They commit crimes, so they deserve to be in prisons.

Sympathy for people in prison??

I'm sorry.

I'm sorry they CHOSE to commit crimes.
I'm sorry they CHOSE to harm innocent people.
I'm sorry they CHOSE to throw away all the opportunities America offers.
I'm sorry they CHOSE to clutter up the justice system.
I'm sorry their CHOICES costs me MORE taxes because they CHOSE to NOT behave.

Sympathy for THEM?.... I'm sorry. That just isn't happening.

Try calling Sean Penn. He cried for mass-murderer Tookie Williams when they cooked him. Maybe Sean the Lib will be more empathetic.

Boatin' in VA!
For those in jail...no...no sympathy at all.

For their spouses and children who are without an important member of their family being with them for the holidays...all the sympathy in the world goes out to them.

It all depends what they did and why. If I had to provide for my family and I couldn't get a job then I too would probably steal from stores (if it was a last option) I firmly believe that anyone can be drove to crime. So it all depends what they did and why

Depends on what they did, I think, and what kind of people they are. If someone's there because they got in trouble with drugs, say, I'd feel more sympathy for them than if they were wife beaters or drug dealers.

That depends on what they did to get there. I feel sympathy for anyone who is in jail for marijuana regardless of the time of year, because they simply should not be there. On the other hand, a murderer has deprived some other person of all their Christmases. He is where he should be.
