Do you need a license to own a sword / bow in the US?

Forgive the silly question, but I am curious.
Additional Details
By the way, I am not planning on USING these items, I have some antique / decorative items, but they are still sharp!

As far as I know, you do not need licenses to own either of those two items, though laws do vary from state to state, and even from city/county to city/county within the states. You would need a license to use the bow for hunting purposes, but aside from that, you're usually okay. Your local police department can assist you in determining exactly what is legal, and what is not. Since you said that you are not planning on actually using these items, you shouldn't have much of a problem, if any at all.

Some states such as New York and California have more strict laws than others, so it would definitely be a good idea to check with your local authorities just in case. Most items outlawed in states/cities/counties are things such as switchblades, automatic knives, brass knuckles, throwing stars, etc. With swords and bows though, you generally should not have any problems.

No, you do not. However, in most states it's illegal to carry any double-edges blade of any length, but a single edges blade can be as long as you like, so long that it is not concealed unless it's under a certain lenth...4 3/8 inch blade. Bows are legal, so long as they are not used dangerously or shot at or towards a person or inappropriate animal or someone else's property.

I've never known of any laws requiring a license for these. You do however need to have a license if you are going to use that bow to hunt deer.

Each state has it's own laws on owning weapons. I do not know of any law that requires a license to own a sword/bow but you may need a concealed deadly weapons license to carry it. Call your local ATF/gun dealers.

fr_chuck
no you may own them. if you wish to carry them, you may need a permit(licence)

You need to check your county and state laws. Each state and county is different. Your local sporting goods store may be able to help you.

And in response to the answer above, you DO need a license to both own and carry a firearm in most states and counties.

No, you don't.

i don't think so, but you may need a license to use them,,Just like a gun.............What would happen if we all had any choice of weapon and were all on the streets together at any given time?
That is the reason for laws and licensing.....

emucompboy
Not where I'm from.

However, double-edged swords of certain lengths are illegal here (California). Generally, long enough to kill but short enough to hide in half your pants leg are illegal here. In your mail order catalog, you'll see for some items "won't ship to California."

Nope... but it would not surprise me if they brought legislation in to that effect... after all you get id'ied for smokes and booze but any fool can buy a gun, up to a fully auto assault rifle in some states, with just a driving licence !

No... constitution states you can bear arms, that includes bows (provided your not an Indian) and blades (provided your not a Muslim).

Fear not my lady, no one will be knocking on the door to ask for a permit!

?

The law is different in every state. Contrary to popular midatlantic belief, most states do not require a license to own a gun, bow, or sword, so long as it is not in a certain class, such as a machine gun (and I mean a true machine gun).

It's fine to own a bow or sword almost anywhere, though you may wish to check your local laws.
