Do you support the death penalty?
Find answers to your legal question.

Do you support the death penalty?

I... DON'T
Additional Details
DGP - I agree with you in regards to the fact that I hate that it costs so much to keep a prisoner... BUT what I don't agree with is the state being able to take away a persons life. What gives them that right?

The death penalty have been given to many innocent people (part of the reason it takes years is because we TRY but are not successful at being sure there is no doubt of guilt)
The death penalty does not deter, in fact there is reason to think it is just the opposit
The death penalty is of questionable morality and I personally feel that it lowers us to the level of the criminal and validates the crime
The death penalty is much more expensive than life imprisonment
The death penalty almost always is applied unevenly -- race, education, class, wealth all dramatically affect the likelihood of getting or not getting it. Poor, uneducated, mentally ill, low intelligence, and people of color are far more likely to get this penalty and others to escape it for identical crimes.

What is the purpose of the death penalty?
Revenge?
Deterrent? (Has been shown not to work)

Why should we kill people who kill people to show that killing people is wrong?

Unless there is absolute proof that the person committed the crime, which usually doesn't happen, I am opposed to it.
There have been too many cases where DNA evidence exonerated the convicted person.

death is not a penalty.
no judgement is without failure, so death penalty is often for the wrong person, the person that is stupid is killed, the wrongdoer , the criminal is not.
People that are sentenced to death are mostly the poor and the stupid, the mental ill people.
(keeping someone in jail is not the best way to prevent crime, but that is another matter)

Yes, but only for crimes like 1st degree murder, rape, and child molestation.

In the US, it costs much more to carry out a death sentence than it does to incarcerate a prisoner for life:

http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/costs-death-penalty

Since 1993, seventeen people have been exonerated by DNA testing, and released from death row:

http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/innocence-list-those-freed-death-row

About 49% of the people executed in the US are black:

http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/cp.htm

While blacks make up only about 25% of the overall US population:

Politics and religion aside, I don't know how anyone can logically support a system (of anything) with so many obvious and serious flaws.

Yes I do support the death penalty. There should be more and the crime rate would go down. Rapist of children and women, murders, anyone who takes a life or harms another to the point that their life's have changed due to the crime EX( now victim is paralyzed or no longer like they used to be) all of these criminal should die. Victims loose so much and the criminals don't. Free housing and meals. Stop the Madness and get rid of these people,......

ME TOO! no one has any right to take away someone's life, even if they are completely nasty.
People who say yes, you are just as evil as Hitler.

No, I don't.

I don't think it's fair that someone could have killed many people, he made each person's family suffer for the rest of their lives. But instead of suffering for the rest of his life, he's killed. Which he could easily done himself.

Nothing could ever make that better, but to even it up a bit more, he should spend every miserable day he has left in solitary confinement. That way, the families of the victims will know that he will never again hurt another human being, and he will possibly never be truely happy again.

why not, got to support something. Like people who have commited crimes and are about to get caught kill themselves...how is it different? And most criminals get out after 2 yrs them commit the crime again...sometimes very horrific crimes.

Yes... What I don't support is some one being on death row for years. Just get it over with then we don't have to pay for the losers.
