Do you tell boss that you interviewed for another position in your company?
Find answers to your legal question.

Do you tell boss that you interviewed for another position in your company?

I recently had an interview in another department for my company. Do I tell my boss that I interviewed or wait to see if I'll even get an offer from the position? I do want to tell my boss, but if I don't get the job then I'll feel awkward for even mentioning it to my boss. I am not too close with my boss as well.

I would be extremely surprised if your boss didn't know about the interview. Human Resources would normally keep a department head informed of their staff applications and ask his/her opinion. Obviously I don't know your company so it's no guarantee it's happened.

I was in this exact position three years ago, but after much soul-searching and prayer, I decided to be honest with my then supervisor. She was a wonderful person to begin with, so I went in explained to her my thoughts about the current department and my desires to go further. She understood totally and gave me a recommendation letter, but better than that she told me if I wasn't selected, I would still have my same position with her until I found something better. Now if you don't have a supportive boss, then be strong and still tell them because what they hear by word of gossip?

Always remember what happened to Joan Rivers when she didn't let Johnny Carson know she was looking elsewhere. Joan Rivers? you say? Who's that? Exactly my point.
As long as it's in the same company, you boss already knows. Let him know. Even if you don't get the position, your boss will know that you are looking to improve your skills/position, etc. He/she may even be willing to help you along.

If you're interviewing for a job in the same company- your boss is gonna find out. In this case you should have given your boss the courtesy of letting them know that you were going to inquire about the job in the other department.

TG
Absolutely. Who's the first person you think they'll call for a reference?

I wouldn't keep it from my boss unless I had a really great reason to do so. It's never good to go around someone who is ablove you...... and will probably find out anyway through others in the company. I think it would be rather disrespectful to your boss if he/she heard it from someone else. You should probably use it to your advantage and let it be known you are wanting to further your career within the same company.....because it's such a great company.....blah blah...

Good Luck

Out of professional courtesy it would be a good idea. Check your company's HR policy, too.

Go Bears!
You should contact your HR department and see what the company policy is on this...

no as long as you don't think that someone from the other department will tell. Did you ask them not to mention it? It's quite possible that he was told. I would wonder if i were your boss, why you were wanting to transfer.

Even though you aren't close to your boss the best thing is to be honest. If you are a hard worker with a good work ethic they will want to see you succeed and move onward and upward.

i wouldnt say anything to your boss until they make an offer.

i never have.

mikegreenwich
I would. Without his/her support, it may be harder to move.

Since it's within the company, and since you said you "want to tell her", I'd say go ahead & do it. You're not that close to her, so maybe it will help build a little trust & strengthen the relationship (which will help you with future moves). They do call past employers to follow up with interviews in many cases.... mine got checked pretty quickly when I was applying for a new job.

Don't mention it unless he does. Chances are, he was informed of your interview by the human resources department already. He may want to talk about it. He may not.

I wouldn't.

I would keep it to myself until you know you have the position. On the other hand, if the potential new boss wants check on your last jobs, your current boss will know anyways.

?
No law says you have too.

well just say i am lookin for more money and that job offers more 2 feed my family i said that 2 my boss and it worked

Barry auh2o
Yea, good question.
I'd mention it, but wait until you are already talking to hm abot something else.
If in the meantime he confronts you,, admit it, but just say, you didn't think much would come from it.

I wouldn't tell your boss anything unless you get offered the position.

CLAUDIA
don't tell him...hell no!you might lose your job if you do!and worse they may not make you an offer!

no personal experience says keep it mum. no need to say anything at all particularly if they are not close to you. if you do get the job, you'll be leaving so you won't need to worry about it . If you do mention it, he will know that you are thinking of leaving and that could really backfire in terms of the jobs your are assigned, etc
