Let only the responsible ones drive, and make sure they are recommended by teachers, parents, friends,etc.

It is a problem of statistics here. Of course the most misleading statistic presented is always this one: "If we raise the driving age to 18 fewer 16 year olds will die in car crashes" which is of course true because fewer 16 year olds will be in cars, but then the move is to say 18 year olds and possibly further up. Like most things you tend to be the worst at something when you first start doing it, hence more 16 year olds get tickets and get in to accidents, so 16 year olds statistically are worse drivers than say 25 year olds. It doesn't translate to individuals directly (I know some people who were actually better drivers at 16 than they are in their late 20's) and also doesn't account for differing levels of maturity and the fact that the young tend to have quicker reflexes and sharper sense to compensate, at least partially, for lack of experience.

I'm 19 right now, and have been driving since i was 16, and i gotta say the extra years of practice have made me a better driver today. If you move the age back you will just move the accident prone age back.

No I don't think 16 is too young to drive. I got my license when I was 16. Most everyone did. I think they should keep it that way.

Where I come from, you are allowed to drive at 18, but now they are thinking about giving you the license with 17, but then you are only allowed to drive with someone older than 25 and who has his license longer than 4 years.
I was a really bad driver with 18 and only the years of practice made me better. Of course, I knew that should I have an accident during my 2 year probation time, I would have to start all over again. Here, you have to spend at least 22 lessons with your driving instructor, have to take part in at least 20 hours of theoretical training, and have to pass the theoretical and practical test. I think many poeple fail the test, and that shows that practice and learning is the trick, not really the age.

Of course, the problem is not 16 year old driving cars, but 16 year old drinking and driving cars. That causes a lot of accidents.

BUT, the statistics have to be analysed carefully. There are more accidents with young drivers, but that is not always because the young drivers are at fault! Where a seasoned driver might have avoided a crash with another car, a young driver my act wrong in such a stress situation (I mean where not the young driver, but another driver acts wrongly).

My answer: More training, training, training and giving the kids a psychological/mental training as well to show them what can happen when one drives drunk. Then pass a test (does not have to be a big one), and 16 is OK.

No. But I think in order to get a license at 16 a person should have to "train" or "practice" for 2 years.

I started to drive when I was 9, by the time I was 16 I was very good at driving, but, this would depend on who the person is, good drivers don't panic! those who pannic have a damm good reason! why? cause they know what there in for... CRASH!

When I was 16, I thought it was plenty old enough.

Now, I'm 22, and I cringe every time I see some 16 year old driving around.

I think the age should be increased to 18. Keep high school kids out of the driver's seat. I think this would help solve a lot more problems than just the high accident rate in youth.....

I'm 16, and I'm a great driver. A lot of people at this age are just too dumb to know how to drive, so in that case, it shouldnt be based on age; it should be based on skill.

There should be a maturity test. and they should have to be at least a B average in School. otherwise they should be 18.
