I suppose if it provides some consolation to the family of the victim it is good. However, it's actually more cost effective to jail someone for life when you take into account the mandatory appeals process. Another added bonus of life in prison vs. capital punishment- there are worse things than death, and a fair amount of them occur in prison. Death is the easy way out.

I think it should be optional. And I think it should be available to everyone, not just prisoners.

Not the punishment part... just the right to die. There is nothing punishing about dieing. It is a great thing if you are in pain or if you have nothing else to live for. If you have to spend the rest of your life in prison, or if you are afflicted with chronic severe pain and all of your friends and family have died, it is unfair that the law should prevent criminalize the taking of your life. Not that they couldput you in jail for committing suicide or anything, but the fact that it is so stigmatized is lame, in "right-to-die" cases.

I believe that capital punishment is murder. It is revenge masked as justice. Besides the only ones being punished by this are the relatives of the victim. As despicable or evil the executed is, he is someone else's son, father or husband, and these people don't deserve to see their loved one die. Besides I can find far worse punishments for guilty people than death. How about putting a child murderer and molestor with the general population of the jail. He will probably get molested or abused a few times there. To me that would be a very suitable punishment for people like that. In the economic side, it is more expensive to put some one to die than to keep him in jail for the rest of his life.

The way it's done now is far too arbitrary. It should be consistent and not just apply to minorities or the poor.

I think capital punishment is a terrible thing. It really is very barbaric and disgusting. I mean, it's vile! How can you actually comfortably say someone deserves to die?!? Who the f"@k are you to do so? I'm not saying it's up to God or anything, hell I don't even know if he/she exists, but it's just horrible. Even worse when people are saisfied that someone has just been killed. Seriously, I really hate the whole idea.

i wouldn't mind it as much if we were 100% sure that every person being executed was guilty. The truth it, innocent people are found guilty, especially minorities. And this isn't rare, there are thousands of innocent people locked up. In my opinion, its better to free a criminal than put away an innocent man. That is what our country stands for and the idea of there being even .01% chance of a mistake makes the death penalty wrong in my eyes.

A disproportionate number of those charged with capital punishment compared to those who committed crimes are minorities. I don't think it's acceptable for our country to continue to administer this type of justice. There have been innocent people that have been saved while on death row, and I'm sure there have been innocent people killed. I don't think it's just to kill a person, even if they have committed the worst of crimes. Furthermore, capital punishment has been shown not to be a deterrent for criminals. Only a few other countries in the world have capital punishment, places like Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

I think it is a failure. The USA has a higher murder rate than many countries that have abolished capital punishment. It costs more to execute a criminal than it would to just imprison that person for life. And finally if the justice system convicts and executes an innocent person by mistake then there is no way to put it right.

although not much of a deterrent for those folks that are awarded with such high regard by the people, at least if this business eventually somehow becomes more streamlined and accepted that will mean less money wasted on maintaining what society declares human waste.
its teeteringly acceptable now as it will always be a hot topic with theologians and would be do gooders that just plain dont get out of the country much or perhaps the house for that matter to understand not all of God's creatures should be preserved and that some of the more viscious predatory animals in this world are indeed bipedal.

Murder - killing someone - is a crime so abhorrent that we demonstrate our abhorrence of the crime by killing someone. That makes sense. I think. Doesn't it? I'm sure it makes sense.

There are many arguments against capital punishment, but the above argument seems to me to be the most fundamental.

I think it is barbaric and wrong, to many mistakes are made and in the U.S if you are poor or black you are dead, while those rich enough to be able to afford a defense walk free. It has been shown that it is more costly for the state to murder a person then it is to keep them incarcerated for 30 years. It is also been proved that it is no deterrent to crime as most murders are crimes of passion and are not likely to be repeated again.
